We visited this restaurant after seeing it all over social media and were excited to try their AYCE sushi and Korean BBQ. Since we were a larger party, we expected a bit of a wait and were seated around 8:26 PM. Our family came from various areas; Sacramento, Walnut Creek, Pittsburg, Oakley, and even Texas. Unfortunately, our experience was frustrating and disappointing.
We were seated in the back and had our orders taken as two separate tables, even though we were sitting together. The first half of our table received their food promptly and had a great experience. However, the other half of the table barely received anything, just two items initially. Our original waiter never checked back on us, and despite trying to get the attention of other staff, we were ignored until we had to go up ourselves to ask for assistance. A kind staff member helped us re-enter the lost order, but even then, some people only received a single sushi roll and never got the full AYCE experience.
To make matters worse, no one informed us of the kitchen’s closing time or the last order cut-off, even though their website listed a closing time of 9:30 PM. By the time we realized, it was too late to get the full experience we came for.
When we brought our concerns to the manager, things only got worse. He was on his phone, dismissive, and not at all receptive to our frustration. He initially tried giving us $10 gift cards for a future visit. Which, after this experience, we had no intention of making. After a lot of back and forth (and him having to call his boss multiple times), they finally agreed to adjust six people from the “C group” pricing to “B group,” but the entire situation was unnecessarily frustrating.
The servers (aside from the one who ignored us) were kind and even advocated for us, but the management was completely unprofessional. Some of the sushi was good, but nothing amazing, and certainly not worth the long drive or the terrible service experience. Hopefully, they improve as they are still a newer restaurant, but based on this visit, we won’t be returning.
Would not recommend making a trip out here unless their service...
Read moreI’ve tried Tsunami Sushi a couple of times now, and overall, I have mixed feelings.
The variety of rolls is definitely a plus. I really appreciated that many of the rolls weren’t overloaded with rice, which is perfect for the all-you-can-eat menu—it lets you try more without getting full too fast. I even had a couple of rolls that came without rice, which I really liked. I also tried their Wasabi Bombs, and those were surprisingly good!
However, one of the rolls I ordered (I believe it was something from the baked section) came drenched in sauce—way too much for my taste. It overpowered everything. On a previous visit, something I ate left my stomach feeling off, which made me hesitant this time around.
The main reason I gave it 3 stars was the disappointing experience with their pricing. I came on a Friday, expecting the weekday all-you-can-eat special. But I was told it didn’t apply because Fridays are considered a holiday/weekend pricing day. That was frustrating—especially since there was no clear notice about this restriction. I left feeling like I paid more than expected.
Service-wise, the servers were attentive and helpful once we were seated. But the host at the front wasn’t very welcoming, and unfortunately he was the one who had to break the pricing news to us, which didn’t help the tone of the visit.
There are things I do like here—the portion sizes, some of the flavors, and the variety—but I’ll be more selective next time about what I order, and I’d recommend clearer communication on pricing to avoid disappointing first-timers...
Read moreWe have been here more times than I would like to admit. Which is disappointing as to our visit today. We had not been in since the menue change and I liked the simplicity which more matches other places in the area. However, the owner in the past made accommodations for my two picky eaters. Today, the current manager is not empowered and seemed to restricted in trying to help us. Only options were to split two tables which would then cause my wife to sit with the two younger ones and notnpartake in AYCE so they could eat an item more appropriate for their age and dietary restrictions and my older son and I were offered a terrible seat away from them. The manager refused to give us a table in requested. Needless to say, the change in menue simplicity isnt worth separating from the majority of my family for a meal. IMHO the main reason to go out is to be with family. I hope the new restaurant in the east bay is doing well (notes in my east group seem to imply it's starting out ok) but I hope the values of the owner comes back to this store and they realize rigidity, while in the short term might seem good on paper, it will cause those needing some accommodation to go elsewhere, such as today, and most likely in the future. We went down the street were welcomed like family. As it should be especially at today's prices. As consumers we have a choice to go where we are welcomed and appreciated as opposed to places that are rigid and see us as just a monetary solution at the time only. You should consider future ramifications of...
