My fellow foodies, who are looking for traditional and creative Vietnamese cuisines with solid flavors, you MUST try Phở Vinh! This is the place to visit if you're craving hot bowls of phở or bún bò huế (traditional noodle soups) or a warm bánh mì (sandwiches made with small, airy French baguettes, various meats of your choice, and lightly pickled/fresh veggies).
The special and grilled pork bành mì were both excellent, and the waitress's suggestion of adding the house-made mayo to the grilled pork bành mì was spot on! While a bánh mì costs a little more here, the owner bakes the baguettes fresh daily and she doesn't skimp on the meat, which is always perfectly marinated.
They have various types of bánh bao (steamed buns with sweet or savory fillings), and the custard bao has a nice sweetness as a small dessert. I've tried their new bao wrap/sandwich with bánh mì filling (that they adorably call a bao taco), and the owner hit that creation out of the park, too!
As for the phở and bún bò huế - hands down, both were the most flavorful of all the MI restaurants I've tried so far, and Phở Vinh's were better than many SoCal phở restaurants'. Again, if you're a foodie and you're willing to spend a couple dollars more per bowl for excellent flavor, than this is the place...
Read moreThe meatballs in the pho was outstanding, service was great, store was clean. But I found the noodles to be too short for chopsticks (short noodles are better for forks) and the overly salty broth tasted like a cross between traditional pho broth and store bought beef stock. I would probably alternate between here and Pho Lucky to get pho in the Farmington area. (Madison Heights still has the best pho in metro Detroit.)
I think Pho Vihn makes their own meatballs unlike the other pho places. It's unlike (and better) than any of the other pho places in metro Detroit, with great texture (not stiff, but firm) and just the right amount of white pepper seasoning.
My boyfriend really liked how much meat came with each bowl.
EDIT: We came back a week later, the noodles are back to normal lengths and the soup tastes better, more in line with what I originally expected. The owner was quite friendly; more than happy to give recommendations and help with food choices. We tried their pickled / vinegar onions with sriracha this time and it was delicious. If they keep this up and provide breath mints with the bill, I will consider revising my rating to 5 stars.
EDIT 2: Meatballs have switch to the same ones everyone else uses. Let's see if they...
Read moreVery disappointing to see an owner taking tips from a young waiter. The food was descent, but the customer service was poor. The desert was great. My family and I had good dinner. As we were leaving my family wanted to tip the younger waiter $10.00, the owner/bald head old man wearing glasses said in Vietnamese don't give him tips, because it's not his turn. In my mind, the bald head man with glasses did not take our order, did not help us with giving our service one bit. We didn't want to make a big deal because it was like that young man had his job online the line.
So, I told my family to walk out and let me see if the owner check for tips on the table. So he did, I ran inside immediately took my 2nd tip back the intention was for the young black man. As soon as the old man was snitching around the table I walked and said, my family forgot that I tipped you already.
Old man left the table and tell the young black man go clean the table.
I highly suggest new customers, or regulars please tip the waiter/waitress directly to the person who serves you food and take your orders.
Our meal was $45.00, tipping $10.00 which isn't bad. This was my recently experience...
