I've lived in Findlay for a few years now, and the quirk of Dougie John's always had an appeal, but not a "spend 20-30 minutes in the car for curbside pickup" appeal. As soon I found out they had both delivery and a pickle pizza, I decided to give them a fair shake, and I was impressed all around.
The online ordering system is spot-on, with an instant confirmation and ETA (fairly accurate, only took 6 minutes longer than estimated, which is better than average for the far side of town). The website is modern, and easy to navigate using the drop down menu on mobile.
I decided to give the pickle, taco, and chicken bacon ranch pizzas a go, as well as the breadsticks and a cherry dougie fold-up to get a good feeling for the place. I greatly appreciate them hand marking which box contained what to keep things easy to find. The aesthetics of the boxes are simple, without feeling lazy. They're of sturdy construction, and the black tape neatly sealing the boxes spoke to the attention to detail that was in store.
The pickle pizza was everything I wanted in a pickle pizza, both designed and executed with purpose. It isn't listed on their menu PDF, but it's available in the online ordering portal.
The taco pizza is hands down the best execution of a taco pizza I've ever had, out of the roughly three dozen different versions of the mashup I've tried; dougie john's crust pairs with it masterfully, and the ingredients are both chosen and arranged in a logical manner that makes it feel more like a taco than a pizza on the palette. My big recommendation to the home gamer is to fry it in olive oil or butter over medium heat for about a minute to give the crust a chalupa like texture, unless you're more fond of a gordita, in which case, it's ready to go out of the box. The inclusion of taco sauce packets is greatly appreciated, and speaks to the thought put into this item.
The chicken bacon ranch pizza is the only pizza I ordered with their FAT "thick" crust, which again, isn't listed in the menu PDF, but is an available option when ordering online. It was a chicken bacon ranch pizza, which is about all I can say. It might have been the thick crust throwing off the flavor balance, or it may have just been the stiff competition it got from the other two juggernauts of pizza on my order ticket, but it came across as bit muted and dry.
The breadsticks were downright addictive. To my initial horror, I'd accidentally ordered a 16", but that was far from an issue after the first bite. This was the only menu item I'd modified, with the addition of bacon, which I'd highly recommend. The pizza sauce included is plentiful, and complex. I was guessing at the flavor profile any time I went in for a dip, but thanks to the garlic butter sauce baked into the sticks, it was far from a necessary part of the order. Overall they live up to their reputation.
The cherry dougie fold up was the only real flop in my order. The first bite was bitter, then sour, then sweet. I was so stuffed and tired by the time I got to it, I left it at one bite. Coming back to it the next day, I noticed the bottom was charred black, giving it the offputting bitterness. The filling was generous, and the dough that wasn't burnt was supple. It may just not be the right item for me, but I'd be willing to give the apple dougie fold-up a try in the future.
Overall, dougie john's is a Findlay gem. If it weren't for my dietary restrictions I'd be a regular patron, but I'd be more willing to give their alternative options (gluten free cauliflower crust, keto bowls, salads, etc) a try if nutrition info was readily available online. I may contact them at some point to see if they'd part with an ingredient list so I can calculate it on my own, since it's rare for a small establishment to go through the trouble...
Read moreLove Love Love them! We moved our Med1Care office close by and was told we had to try them because their food is amazing and their staff is great. That was in December and we literally order 1-4 days a week from them and never disappointed. Everything I order is amazing! They even overcooked my pizza once and instead of sending it out that way they said it wasn't up to their standards and they would personally walk it down because they wanted to make sure we got it perfect. I am a huge pizza lover and never would I think cauliflower pizza would be something I would consider....yeah, I order it at least once a week because it is THAT GOOD! Thank you to everyone that works here and you have forever customers from all of us! Exactly the type of local place I am happy to support and give my money to. Only complaint is they don't open until late in the day on Mondays and I usually always want them Monday lol....but its not really a complaint its just me...
Read moreAbsolutely incredible. I am blown away. I came in on a Monday on a lark; I'm usually a Joey Fratello's boy, but they are closed on Mondays and I had a hankering. I decided to grab a variety of things to really give them a good try.
We ordered a small specialty pepperoni pizza, nice and basic. Tried the thick pan crust they have for it. Got the philly cheese flatbread, ordered the largest cheese bread they had there, and topped it with the cherry dessert pizza. Total was just over 40 bucks, completely reasonable.
When I tell you this blew us out of the water, holy CRAP. There's really no other words for it, just fantastic all around. Good flavor, perfect amount of toppings, crust was crisp and flavorful. They really just nailed this. Sorry Mr. Fratello, I'll still come around for the breaded ravioli, but this place is wildly good. 5 stars. 10 stars, one million...
