Athenian Restaurant, N. Tamiami Trl., N. Fort Myers, Fl., Here is my 2 cents on the food and chatter.
I order the special of the day. Oxtail over pasta. Never had it it. Never heard of it.
It was about 11 bucks. But it was good.
I got a cup of delish tomato soup too. A salad along with a dessert was included in this special a good deal. Plus a rarity a was bun included
It was oxtail cooked in a tomato base sauce. On a bed of spaghetti. The sauce was cooked with sweetness of tomato and onions. The oxtails were big & meaty falling off the bones.
Alas they were very messy. I needed to man handle them to get all of the tender beef.
I love this place. A mom and pop joint thats serves comfort food. Quality ingredients, large portions at reasonable prices.
Service is top notch.
But because of this it can be very crowded.

Athenian Restaurant, Tamiami Trl., North Fort Myers,Fl. Here is my 2 cents and chatter. This is an old skool proper eatery. They give you bread, soup or salad and a big filling entree at a reasonable price. I got a great split pea soup & a salad. My meal was medium cooked lamb chops. Great veggies and mashed taters with a good gravy. Service was stellar. They do a outstanding breakfast. One of my favorites places
Athenian Restaurant, Tamiami Trail, N. Fort Myers, Fl., Here is my 2 cents on the food, a rant & rave a bit of chatter. The Food. 9 bucks for a full ole fashion meal. In this case if you are german descent. Pork ribs with sauerkraut, mashed taters/gravy, house made coleslaw and housemade chicken noodle soup. Almost like mother use to make. It may not tickle your taste buds, BUT more than you needed it fills your belly without emptying your wallet. ( plus many other entrees at this price ) Soup was good. Rave... Good chow without breaking the bank. Rant...Too bad other places do not do this. Service was great... Makes you feel like you are at a home..ell after several recommendations by folks I swim with at the community pool. I checked out this place.
It was a Sunday around 1130 am. Place was half full You seat yourself. My waitress, Irene was Outstanding!. Explain the menu pointed out the special. told what she liked. Very personable.
This is not a fancy place an OLD School basic food. An entrée comes with soup, salad, (Greek is great) roll, 2 sides and a dessert.. Menu has Lots of seafood, pasta ,large breakfasts, lamb shank meatloaf chicken fried steak, etc. . Service was good. If you are a calorie counter stay away. If you are hungry bring an appetite and a doggie bag.
I will...
Read moreAlmost A True Greek Restaurant! I say 'Almost' only because they do not have gyro meat that they cut off of a spit which was a total surprise, but the rest of the food we've had there has been very good. On our first visit I had the Gyro Plate with a baked potato side. Entrees here include a soup AND a salad AND a desert - what a surprise. I opted for the Egg Drop Soup. The soup was one of the best I've had. Not as thick and eggy as many oriental restaurants, with large pieces of green pepper in it - very tasty. I then had a side Greek salad which I really enjoyed. Crisp lettuce, topped with cucumber, olives, feta cheese crumbles and onions, dressed with creamy Greek dressing. My gyro plate came out with a very tasty and soft pita with a plentiful amount of gyro meat topped with shredded lettuce, diced tomato and onion accompanied by a container of wonderful tzatziki cucumber sauce. The gyro meat was cut fairly thin and probably heated on the flat top. It lacked the good garlicky, lamb and beef flavor that I was hoping for, but I ate it. I think my baked potato had been baked much earlier in the day as it was a bit dry and not very warm. Sour cream and butter accompanied the potato. My wife had the Large Greek Salad With Gyro Meat. A good amount of crisp lettuce topped with cucumber, olives, onions, feta cheese, quite a bit of the somewhat flavorless imposter gyro meat, warm and tasty pita bread triangles and a bowl of greek dressing. The salad plate also included one tasty Dolmades, which is a stuffed, rolled grape leaf. The gyro meat was the downfall of this otherwise tasty plate. As my entree also included desert, I opted for rice pudding which was good, just not spectacular. On our second visit, I selected the Full Order of Biscuits and Gravy ($7.99) and my wife had the Athenian Omelet ($10.95). My B & G was two split fluffy biscuits covered with sausage gravy. The gravy did have a decent amount of sausage in it and I felt the flavor was ok, better than many others, but not as good as a few. My wife's omelet included tomato, green pepper, onions, and the 'fake' gyro meat with a side of tzatziki sauce. Included hash browns were nice and crispy and the buttered rye toast was good. My wife said the omelet is probably the best place to use that gyro meat. We were there around 10:30 in the morning and they were very busy. We saw many good looking dishes coming out to the diners. Their prices are very fair, portions are large and service is good. We will return to try some other menu items as it is close to...
Read moreI took my mother out for Mother’s Day and ran into disappointment after disappointment. I had called ahead to see if we could make a reservation. The answer was NO. We looked at the menu online ahead of time because my mom is vision impaired. We all made our choices before we got to the restaurant. As we arrived we were told the normal menu was not available and they only had a special Mother’s Day menu. We ordered off the special menu which was regular menu items but price three dollars more than their normal charge. When the onion soup arrived they did not have croutons or cheese on top and we were informed by the server they were out of these. Then we found out they were also out of ice tea. We ordered three meals. Both mine and my father’s meals were excellent. My mothers meal was the stuffed grouper and was over broiled to the point that it was rubber. The server offered to replace it with something else. She brought it back to the kitchen only to have the manager return to say I am not giving you something else in place of that grouper. She did not apologize to my mother for the meal being cooked wrong. She only came to tell us that she would not replace it with anything. I then said that’s fine. We will just have the check. When the check arrived they still charged us for the meal but they had over cooked to the point that it was not edible. I went up to pay and asked why they charged us for the meal that was cooked wrong and the manager continue to argue with me and make a scene that she was not going to take it off the bill. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. As I tried to pay the bill she held the change in her hand behind the glass window and would not hand it to me as she continued to argue with me. I had to ask her to please give me my change so we could leave. What a disappointment. To treat customers that way is...
