I am sorry to drop 5 stars to 2. Though the food was okay, the service was fair and prices too high. I had a very large cheese and chicken burrito and it would cost $1.99 for a very small mini container of extra cheese as the burrito cheese stuffing proportions were too little for the size. I would have needed at least 5 more to be sufficient. The entire entree was just almost $14! I addressed this with the server who basically blew me off.
There were no senior specials which would have been nice since my two friends and I would have benefited. We were eating at 4p. Looking at costs more closely, most entrees are near $14 and higher. If you order a beverage and no dessert but with a 18% tip you are paying over $20 for one person. In general. If you add fried ice cream here you will be spending over $30 pp. Most folks cannot afford that. A good Mexican meal not so long ago were generous portions, absolutely delicious and you could afford to spend half the price I just paid there!
Our experience was disappointing. In comparison to El Cerritos I think the difference between these two establishments are glaring. The location was near Little Rd. In NPR. There is a real concern for fall precautions due to a high curb making it difficult for people with disabilities entering with ease. I use a white cane and one friend used a walker. If there is a ramp it is not close enough from the handicap spot in the parking lot to the entry of Carmelitas restaurant. This is an issue especially in the heat. The walk is rather far for persons physically challenged.
Finally I was not inspired in getting that Mexican food experience as inside just lacked that kind of atmosphere. It was not the cleanest restaurant I ever ate in though not the worst. It was OK ho hum experience. I'd rather go to Taco Bell because you know what to expect in fast food without going broke for the extra cheese that should have been in the dish to begin with.

Read moreToday Wed 7/24/19 went in to this pace for lunch. OMG I should have gone to Taco Bell. Just moved here 3 weeks ago. Walked in and stood looking around for someone to seat us. Got seated at a table then forgotten about. Every Mexican restaurant I have ever gone salsa and chips are brought before you look at the menu. My wife and I sat and reviewed the entire menu, decided what we wanted and not a sole came to the table. I had to go ask someone cleaning a table what was the trick to getting waited on? He went and got a server. A server that obviously hates her job. Barbara never smiles once. Acted like we were bothering her. Finally got our cokes and chips and salsa. She asked if we wanted the spicy salsa. I said yes! Well the spicy salsa was the same as the regular one. I mentioned it and she seemed annoyed. I commented someone forgot to put the hot spices in it. She said she would tell the manager. She returns with a holder with 4 different kinds of Mexican hot sauce and just plopped it on the table then walked away. (see the photo) The food was ok. Nothing to write mother about. Service sucks!! Barbara needs to go to McDonalds where you expect this type service. The scary part is she is training a new hire. Perfect!! Another table was complaining to her about the expensive bill. $30 for lunch at a Mexican restaurant is steep especially when service sucks. To add insult to injury other servers and cleaning up the floor near the bar. One comes buy 18 inches from my food the dust pan open. Then another walks by with a wet swing mop while I'm putting food in my mouth. Health dept would love this!! My wife and I will never set foot in this place again!! There's too many other mexican placed to eat and get good cust service by servers that enjoy taking care or...
Read moreFirst time eating Carmelitas just now. We ordered through doordash so I can't comment on the dine in experience but I would like to say that I don't normally have a great experience with doordash orders but our food arrived hot and in place. Ok so this is a review for the food not the delivery. My husband is Mexican and even though I can cook Mexican food quite well, we're always looking for an authentic Mexican restaurant.
We both had the carne asada taqueria, which is just tacos with 2 sides. The tacos come with the typical onion and cilantro as well as avocado and crema. Neither of us likes crema (Mexican sour cream) and I'm not a fan of avocado, so I had mine stand. I also ordered a side of pico de gallo as well as extra, extra spicy salsa roja and salsa verde.
For sides I had corn and rice. My husband had black beans and rice. My husband loved everything! He said the rice was moist and flavorful and the beans flavored well also. I did not care for the rice much. The texture was good but didn't have much seasoning.
The beef in the tacos was excellent! And there's such as large amount they double up the corn tortillas so basically instead of 3 tacos you're getting 6! It was tender and well seasoned. However both my husband and I felt the tortillas were a little dry. Good flavor but dry.
The star for me was both salsas and the pico de gallo!. Very spicy and excellent flavor! Season perfectly. I admit they were both better than mine. (I don't often feel that way)
Best part was for each meal it was only $13.99! Neither of us could finish so we will both get two meals more for leftovers tomorrow! All in all we're both pretty happy with what is authentic Mexican food! Bravo, "Carmelita'!
If they fix the issue of the dry tortilla, I would happily...
