We had lunch at Golden Krust in Port Charlotte about a week ago and were pleasantly surprised to find they offered table service in addition to the expected take-out service.
Everyone we spoke to, servers, counter staff and manager, were all extremely friendly and our server, Mariah, was exceptional. We've eaten at restaurants costing five to ten times what Golden Krust does and not been so pleased or impressed by the type of thoughtful, thorough, courteous service that Mariah provided.
The food was very good and the prices were very reasonable considering how large the portions are. We started with the jerk chicken patties which were very flavorful although the bottom crust was a little difficult to cut through. We then ordered the curried goat and the oxtail. Both came with rice and peas, plantains and shredded cabbage. Both portions were very large, the meats cooked to near perfection and the cabbage (neither of us are big fans) was probably the best we've ever had. The plantains were also very good but part way through our meal Mariah brought us another bowl saying they were fresh from the fryer and larger than those we'd been served. We were very impressed!
If we could offer one suggestion, Jamaican food is still not that familiar to a lot of people, so a combination platter would be a great way to allow customers to try several of the more unusual choices. We would absolutely recommend Golden Krust and in fact plan to go there again for lunch...
Read moreCame in for lunch with a friend of mine. I asked to see the menu and was told “she would explain it better”, I listened but then asked to see a Togo menu so I could see the prices and was told that the prices were not correct in the Togo menu. I asked about the lunch combo on the backside of the takeout menu that was about $10 during the week Monday-Friday and this was a Friday afternoon well within the time. I was told it wasn’t very much food. So I ordered the curry goat and a friend had oxtail with rice and peas, slaw and plantains. We got the two dishes and two drinks and the order was $52 without a tip. Crazy. I asked why it was so expensive and was told because we ordered the dinner portion not the lunch combo when I had asked about it multiple times when we came in and was basically told not to order it because it wasn’t a good deal. I asked what the difference between the lunch combo and the dinner portion was and was told no plantains or no slaw and less meat. I would have much preferred to save $20+ and skipped the slaw or plantains. I was also treated very rudely each time I asked about the menu and had questions for some of the food items. I will say the food was delicious and the spices and seasonings used complimented both dishes very well but I’m not in the place to spend $50+ on lunch and I don’t know many people that are. I will most likely not return or be much more insistent about a menu with correct prices...
Read moreThis place has to be the best Caribbean food in my entire area and I cannot exaggerate that enough; I’ve tried every Caribbean spot in my area and there’s no place like home I can truly say that. My pops used to always eat here at least twice a week when I was a kid so it rubbed off on me. I can say I’ve been eating here for 10+ years (and counting) and the food still remains so good, the loving care from the employees still remain and also how sanitized they keep the food and dining area as well still remains, making it a very rare Caribbean cuisine spot to eat. I’ve always grown up on their oxtail plate but recently as I’ve gotten older I’ve been trying different curry meats and I have to say they have the best curry chicken I’ve ever had! Their beef patties are always golden and flaky, I eat the spicy ones. Beverages range from Jamaican kolas to smoothie type drinks; I honestly love this place and it hits hard on Sundays when they’re closed but it’s Gods day so it’s understood! Comfort food, comfort dining no matter where you’re from you’ll feel like home here guaranteed! Sincerely, A...
