I love Chinese food and most Chinese restaurants are very similar in a general sense, with some being better than others as far as food quality, food prep, service etc. House of Chong has been around for a long time (1951) and from what my mother-in law (who grew up in Pensacola) says, the food has not changed and still family owned. She took me here for my birthday and I have to say it is the best Chinese restaurant I have eaten at in a very long time. The food is prepared nicely and taste unlike any other restaurants in the area and the quality of the food was great (Orange Chicken had premium chicken and sauce was tasty, also the peppered beef was awesome). The fried rice was wonderful and again unlike any other restaurants. The egg rolls were fantastic and clearly homemade, not processed like other restaurants. They provided three different dipping sauces, like horse radish (hot), sweet and sour etc. To top the whole experience off, the prices are the best you'll find for the quality and quantity of food they serve. You will not be disappointed...this is my new Chinese food hangout and can't wait to go back to...
Read moreI'm so confused by these reviews! This was the worst place I've ever eaten! All food was dry. You would assume maybe I just got there late..... but plenty of customers, almost all labels full. When I saw the sweet and sour sauce though I got excited. Empty chicken meant fresh.....nope. It came out and it was strange large chunks of grey meat covered in (not a tempura style batter) what looked like old wet reused breading and fried. I tried it though cause it was "fresh", it was immediatly spat into my napkin. Filled up on mushrooms and green beans and got happy knowing dessert was there at least. I'll add pics of the sad mess I found. Spoiler alert, no simple sheet cake with that icing you always find, all items dumped from a can or bag, and all ice cream in a waist high freezer with more ice on edges of inside then edible choices of juice pops and ice cream contained. Needless to say, I barely made it to a bathroom when I left. I have been sick for almost a day now and I can warn you strongly enough. They no longer care about what they are serving and it...
Read moreI came for dinner with a large group, 10+ people. They put some tables together to make a long table to sit us all. The menu was Americanized and I tried to pick something not Americanized. So I had the shrimp with lobster sauce. By lobster sauce, they mean corn starch sauce with white pepper. As seen in the picture, there are about 4 shrimps with some cut up imitation crab meat and veggies. The shrimp wasn't seasoned and overcooked. The dish was about as soupy as a stew. For $8.95, I guess I shouldn't have high hope.
Fun fact: I was waiting to pay my check at the counter. Some dude waiting for pick up and asked me to go check his order. I told him that I don't work there and I was a customer. His friend tried to save the day and made a light heart comment about me knowing the best place to eat. I told him that I just moved here. A young couple in their early 20's about 10 feet away giggled from their stereotyping comments.
Pensacola, I am so glad that I am getting out of...
