The food itself is consistently good - the chicken, fries, and toast always seem to hit the spot, and the sauces are work well with everything. Iâve been eating at this location for years, but recent top-down leadership decisions have left a bad taste that I donât know if I can shake.
First, the way theyâre trending, 2oz cups of sauce seem like theyâre about to clear a dollar each. I get it - rising food costs, inflation, yada yada, but come on, the one âincludedâ sauce isnât enough for a whole platter of fried food. Making customers whip out their change purse mid-meal (seriously) to get another sauce is borderline stingy. Iâd rather see meal prices go up, say, 50¢ an order so they can just handout an extra sauce or two freely without forcing a whole extra transaction.
And then thereâs the water. I donât know if theyâre trying to thwart the occasional diet-coke-in-a-water-cup-thief, or they just want to squeeze a few extra bucks out of every guest they have, but $3 for a cup of tap water is obnoxious. I mean come on, weâre talking fried chicken, fried potatoes, and Texas toast that was (effectively) fried in some mysteriously delicious butter-flavored hydrogenated oil. A single plate probably has enough sodium to pay off our local cardiologistâs summer home in Nantucket; so yeah, water is kind of a necessity in that respect. Yet, unlike every other restaurant Iâve ever been to in the US, youâre going thirsty if you donât pay the full fountain drink price ($3+) for a cup of plain old tap water. The funny thing is, I wouldnât have batted an eye if the cost of my meal had otherwise gone up a dollar or two (again, inflation, food cost, etc. is everywhere) - heck even if they leveled with me and said that water cups were eating into the bottom line so they had to charge 50¢ to break even I wouldâve been understanding - but the principle of strong arming me into buying something I donât want is where I draw the line.
I also feel for the employees that have to enforce such a ridiculous decision and explain how - contemptuous as it may be - is not actually illegal (seriously, several customers asked and the cashier assured each of them that management was sure to do legal review first).
All in all, the next time Iâm feeling fried chicken I donât know that Hueyâs will be at the top of the list - not because of the food (or food prices, even), but because theyâve eroded the customer experience with upcharges and money grabs that detract from everything I...
Read moreI have been a consumer at this spot for about 4 years now. I originally gave this place 4 stars, but had to come back and edit and give this place 1 star based off my last 3 visits. The first of 3 visits, we get there for a takeout order. We order 30 tender meal. We were missing one of the fries and short about 8 tenders. My wife said no biggie dont call. I wanted to, but she said everyone makes mistakes and it ended up being enough. The 2nd time, i called in for my order as we live about 25 minutes away. After placing my order we get about 10 minutes away and we were given a call back advising that they had ran out of everything. There was about 2 hours left before close and this was just odd. No raincheck or nothing. Thank God for the winter springs location. It was an extra 15 minutes out of the way, but they were excellent. Now we come to this last visit. I call and advise i would like 24 tenders. The guy on the line ssid we dont usually do that. I said well i have eaten with you guys for awhile now and there has never been an issue with me ordering like that before. It would be 20 tenders plus add a tender wich would be 4. He goes "oh" it will ring up weird. I said you have the option to add as many tenders with pricing so how is that weird? After about 2 minutes of this, he completes my order. We pick up our order and go back home. We oprn up the box and immediately i notice the tenders are not how they are usually which are crispy. These were very light. My wife said it may be my imagination as i was perturbed by the interaction. I said ok. Then i got another piece where the skin was greasy and wet and it fell off. I broke it in half and it was pink and not done. I begin to cut into more pieces and more of the same. I called and the manager offered for us to bring back. I advised we live too far to do that. He then offered a full refund. I will include the picture. I think this will be the last time my wife and i will visit this one and that is a dhame as this is the closes one. Winter springs will get our business from now on. Just very...
Read moreHuey Magoo's has been fueling my classroom lunchtimes for three years now. I'm graduating in May and I'm going to miss it so dearly. That's the location on campus, though. This was my first visit to this location since they gave away the free tender meals like on their opening day.
The place was pretty empty, so I went straight to the register and fumbled my way through deciding what to order with a very patient cashier. My girlfriend and I ended up getting the tenders for two meal with eight strips total with sides of cole slaw and fries. Fried, of course. With normal Huey's sauce and I decided to experiment with the spicy Huey's sauce.
Our order took forever to get out, which surprised the heck out of me because they make one thing and the place was empty. But it was fine, because I got those tenders home and it was magic all over again. I will say that the size of the tenders were sometimes a little sketchy. I understand trying to get the most bang for your buck as a business, but come on.
The fries were delish, the bread was delish, the cole slaw was fine, and the spice Huey's sauce was actually surprisingly very good. I don't know if I can go back to classic Huey's.
Overall, this place was pretty good. Between the wait time, the small tender size, and the cole slaw that just didn't do it for me, I just couldn't get to the four star decision. But, I'll probably be back to try again. I can't stay away from Huey's...
