"Los Amigos" is one of those places that you always feel a little apprehensive about writing. The reason is absolute selfishness, and pure enjoyment. I like this place, that much.
It is -quite literally- a hole in the wall, smack in the heart of downtown Ruskin. Ok, so the downtown part is a little stretch, but the hole in the wall part is true. It is tucked away, just off of U.S. 41, on 7th Ave, and right behind de O'Reilly's Auto Parts. As a matter of fact, it kinda shares the same parking lot with "O'Reilly's". It shares the building with a next to a what looks like a bait(?) shop that may be out of business (could be wrong), and another business that I have no idea what it is. It looks a little run down, but do not let that discourage you. It will be worth it, I promise.
Several visits to Los Amigos have never disappointed. They serve traditional Mexican fare (not Tex-Mex, although they do serve "chips and queso", I asume because enough "gringos" go to eat there). It's also very convenient in order to introduce the kids to this type of cuisine. Kind of an ice breaker for their palate. Speaking of kids, they do offer items for the little ones. It is incredibly limited to two items: chicken tenders/quesadilla with choice of rice, or fries. It's simple enough to get it out of the way and move to the interesting stuff.
Speaking of traditional, or authentic, the spiciness associated with this kind of cuisine is ever-present, so if you are the kind of person with a sensitive palate, make sure you ask before you order. The waiting staff will be more than willing to provide details, and steer you into more appropriate choices.
The green enchiladas (filled with chicken) are highly recommended. The chile relleno is amazing, and so is the carne asada. If you feel like a having a little bit of everything, then look no further than the "Tampiqueña". It is a very generous serving of the carne asada, chile relleno, red enchilada and a mini quesadilla, with a side of refried beans, rice, and shredded lettuce with pico de gallo. We've also had the chicken soup, and it is amazing. The tacos are pretty good too, but one does not go to Los Amigos to eat tacos. Be adventurous, live a little, have an entree. Pro tip, when having the carne asada, make sure to order the "frijoles charros" as your side, instead of the refried beans. It is a better pair to the grilled steak and seasoning.
The beer has always been very cold, and the service is consistently good. This place is a hidden gem and hopefully will stay where it's at for a long time. Just writing this makes me get in the car and head...
Read moreGood was authentic and good. They actually were swamped when I was there CincoDeMayo. The waitress took our order we had two of us. She got the order correct but somehow the cooks or waitress had one of the orders wrong because it came out being a similar but different taco plate. It was packed and we didn’t say a thing. However we would have preferred to have what we ordered. The menu said corn tacos 6$ and Flour tacos 7$ for three on a plate and a side of beans. Beans were good but they were in a side small dish. The tacos were good. They failed to tell us that tacos shells that are hard and fried are 2$ more. It seems we were charged more than we expected but the price was still good. The decor inside is awesome. The place has painted murals of Mexican scenery on the walls and is very nicely done and beautiful. The place is set back a bit off the beaten path and is in a small Town and seems just like a plain little cafe was you are outside and walking inside. Small seating inside but it was not long of a wait. My 90 year old mother was with me and the travel back to table was tight but staff was wonderful. I would go back. If you are in the area I encourage you to go and eat some authentic food. The people are the next table had large meals including a sizzling dish served and a large burrito and they had enough food for a large appetite. The soda is what we ordered to drink. It was Coke inside a glass bottle but it was great and from Mexico with the sugar cane sugar added instead of the other sugar. This was large bottle and I had a cup with ice and could have it refilled from my bottle twice. Worked for me. . Only con- salsa was a sauce like a tomato sauce no tomato or onion or cilantro. It was good but just a plain thin sauce. There was a green sauce that was...
Read moreMy friend and I decided on Los Amigos as a half waypoint meeting for dinner...the reviews looked good. Upon entering I loved the murals on the walls really well done. Ordered drinks and some guacamole and some small plates Drinks came cjipsncame asked again for plates....gal smiled and said yes Gauc came...asked again for plates.....abo u t 5 minutes later another gal approached and asked what it was we wanted because the other server couldn't figure it out. WtH Servers shouldn't be serving if they can't understand english!! Bad The margaritas were very good and very big. The guacamole came in a lol oval dish and truly ylthe dish was not even half full. I doubt they used an entire avocado 🥑 and if they did it was very small. We ordered another saying a full order or large order and same thing came again. Both of us had Carne asada OMG...not even able to cut it with a knife, so tough stringy just awful. Flavor was just okay, but not very edible being we couldnt even chew it. Told thee girl about It as she cleared our dishes. Oh so sorry was Her comment. browner came over. Told the gal we were to split the bill Half in cash half on card She came back had used all the cash and balance on card. We tried to explain what a we intended...she couldn't get it. The owner Rueban came over to see what the problem was. Told him about the check...npronlem he fixed that, also told him about the food and he asked for our names and said he would credit us on our next visit. Too bad...cute place...but that's the best of it. Very frustrating dinner..took away from what should have been a relaxing reunion...
