Sonnys is definitely an O-town bbq favorite. It is my current go-to for bbq due to location and consistent quality. The meats are always cooked right, fresh, very tasty with the right amount of meat-fat ratio (this varies by the customer, of course), meaning it is rare for me not to leave anything on the plate due to too much fat that just hangs loose, unlike majority of bbq places. All of their meats are cooked perfectly. My special faves are the chopped brisket (marbled, savory), St Louis ribs (tender, falls off bone easily), and their Angus burgers. The Angus burger has been cooked to specification (i usually order medium) about 95% of the time, vs more like 67-75% for other bbq places, even steak places and always is delicious and filling. Their burgers are worth the extra $2-4 vs a fast food joint and actually one of the cheapest for a steak/bbq establishment.
Service is usually good, but can be a little slow at times when slammed. They are always polite and look out for you - just about every server, but my fave is Lisa since she always adds that extra touch of asking if you want drinks and sauces to go.
Sonnys also has real specials where they offer a little more fir the season for that dish. Other places just showcase items for the season - Sonnys gives a real deal. Like the current summer specials on AYCE St Louis ribs for 19.99. That is the usual price for 1 lb. With the AYCE, there is bread, 2 sides included. So they offer real deals.
Also love how they offer choice of garlic toast vs cornbread with entrees. Other places you have to side order cornbread except for specific dishes. Sonnys soft drinks are also very generous for dine in - the equivalent of jumbo/extra large. So you may not need a refill!
Their portions are generous delicious, and they are always polite. Good value for the price, considering most places are notably more expensive post-Covid. Yes, easy to see why they are a local favorite...
Read moreorder from this place alot using doordash , its my go to bbq place . order the same thing the candied bacon burger and fries . its always been great. they must have hired a bunch of cooks that cant read or are blind instead of my usual they sent me out a canied chicken sandwich with no fries they must not know the difference between chicken or beef or just cant read but how do you leave off the fries . any way i called the store to talk to the manager they left me on hold for over 10 mins so instead of a conversation i now have to post a review maybe they will hear this since they dont want to talk about it on the phone. if i was the manager id get the cooks glasses or teach them to read . My ribs were old and precooked. I noticed a black line on the side which normally indicates they’ve been reheated. Because I don’t live near University and already made it home, decided to call to share my feedback. After several calls, I was able to speak with a manager named Brandon. Prior to this was hung up on by an associate named Lisa after asking her not to place me on hold as already had multiple failed attempts of reaching out to management, left waiting and no one comes back to the phone. Instead of handling this issue on a store level, I now decided it would be best to address with corporate. I was given two numbers, one of which is disconnected and the other had no option to speak with someone.
