The Sugar Shak — Restaurant in Florida

Stunningly poor service and mediocre ice cream. Staff were painfully transparent about their disdain for their jobs and their customers. They engaged myself and others in the long line with a cold, blank stare, and terse responses. One family ahead of me was hoping there was enough for one more scoop of peanut butter chocolate ice cream, and met with a stone cold "no," without apology, explanation, or invitation to try a different flavor. This was a microcosm of their attitudes toward all customers. My daughter's malt was not particularly creamy, with a somewhat gritty texture (not blended well enough?), and average flavor--not bad, but not good, and definitely not worth $10.50. We have very good ice cream in my hometown, but this was some of the most mediocre ice cream I have encountered anywhere. And their candy is absurdly overpriced, including a package of jumbo gummy bears that should cost $2-3 that was priced $25.

With long lines and lots of activity, there is a bandwagon assumption any busy business must be good at what they do. This business is a clear exception to that rule. They are busy because they are located on Main street, in a prime location, with no significant adjacent competition, catering to affluent traveling families on vacation.

We were here on fall break 10/7-10/16/2017. We came 2-3 times during the week for candy, ice cream, and to show some visiting guests. The entire week we were disappointed. There were 15-20 boxes and large bins covering the entire right hand side of the store blocking walkways and making it hard to maneuver looking at candy. The entire right side was blocked with boxes of T-shirts that were never but up ALSO blocking walkways. The boys behind the counter were RUDE and huffed and puffed when we asked for samples. The hot fudge on the ice cream sunday was chewy. It was a terrible experience all week. We come here every year for our family trip and this was a disappointment. Taking an entire week to clear out your inventory is unacceptable especially during a busy week and Rosemary uncorked but the bad service on top of that was enough for me to write this review! I ordered a brownie sundae with cupcake ice cream, and the guy behind the counter gave me vanilla instead. When I pointed it out, he flat-out refused to fix it. No apology, no remake, nothing. Just rude and dismissive the entire time. We felt unwelcome and rushed out. If you’re gonna charge premium prices, at least get the order right and treat customers with basic respect.

Update: Just saw the owner’s response and… wow. Instead of owning the mistake, they doubled down and tried to mock me for leaving honest reviews elsewhere. Yes, I give feedback when service is bad—and I also give 5-star reviews when places get it right. This wasn’t one of those times.

And no, the sundae wasn’t “subpar” because I didn’t understand the menu. I requested a specific flavor and was denied a fix when the wrong one was served. The attitude I got in-store is exactly what you see in that reply—condescending and...
