Having moved here from Atlanta my wife and I are very familiar with Korean food so we were excited to hear about Ryu's Kitchen. That excitement did not last long. The food was ok, the service was very very slow. That being said they nickel and dime you. At any Korean restaurant kimchi is a staple item and provided for free with your meal like chips and salsa at a Mexican restaurant, not here. You have to pay extra for everything including kimchi. If you want lettuce wraps, it's $1.50 for (3) leaves and a small bowl of kimchi is $3. Another staple food item is kimchi jige or kimchi soup. This can typically be ordered as an appetizer or as a meal in a larger size. Again not here. When I inquired about it our server didn't even know what it was. My wife and I ordered hot tea and when we wanted a refill they were there ready to charge us extra, so no free refills on drinks. Lastly I ordered the samgeyopsal which is spicy pork belly. When it was brought to me there was no spice. There is a pork belly dish that is without spice, but its name is completely different from what I ordered and instead of bringing me a new and correct order they jist threw mine back in the pan and added some spice as an afterthought. It's supposed to come in a spicy red pepper and garlic sauce not with a sprinkling of hot pepper flakes. So if you're from a bigger city and looking to approximate the korean dining experience you may be used to, keep looking. But if you're willing to pay extra for standard fare that should come with your meal and aren't hung up on quality then go for it. As for us, it's unlikely that we'll...
Read moreOne star for atmosphere. It’s small and contemporary, and mostly I like that it’s clean and simple. It would be good for people who don’t like chaos and clutter. The food is... ok. It doesn’t taste or feel very authentic to me. I haven’t eaten at many korean joints but I cook it a lot and watch Korean food shows and it seems similar but not the best. Flavors are kind of dull, to me. I’m used to lots of spice and flavor though. Also, I’m vegan and I THOUGHT they were vegan-friendly. I ordered kimchi stew which is normally made with kimchi spices and water. Maybe broth sometimes and vegetables. I asked specifically for tofu kimchi. I got it to go. I opened it up and tasted the broth... tasted gross to me. Homemade is better. Then I scooped my spoon down into the stew and pulled it up and realized that it was chock full of pork with a few pieces of tofu. I called and asked if it was possible to have it remade and I would come and get it. The owner said I could have it remade but I’d have to pay for it, full price. I let them know that the description led me to believe that it didn’t have actual meat in it. The waitress said that she agreed that it’s unclear but there’s nothing she could do about it. Sorry, I don’t leave bad reviews for errors but they refused to take care of their customer. I have been to your place before and thought the environment was nice so that’s why I tried again. But if you make things unclear then don’t take care of your customer, it’s just not...
Read moreI had a chance to visit Ryu's Kitchen today for lunch and I enjoyed the experience. The store is a small store in a fairly nondescript strip mall off of Hobson Road. But when you step inside, you realize that you have stumbled across something unique. The inside is very nicely decorated and very inviting. The lighting is warm and the decorations give you the feeling of being at home.
The dish that I tried today was the Bulgogi Stew. This dish came highly recommended to me by someone who frequents this store quite a bit. I have to say that she was not wrong in her recommendation. This dish was amazing!
It's basically a beef stew with bulgogi beef, glass noodles, and vegetables served with white rice. Initially, it's a bit of a challenge to figure out how to eat the soup/stew out of the bowl with either your fork, chopsticks, or rather large spoon. But no matter how you get it to your mouth, you will be glad you did. The broth/sauce is fantastic complimented by the beef and veggies. Add some rice to the mix and it's yummy time. This is something I recommend would to everyone.
I also tried one of their Honey Teas. I tried the iced honey Quince tea. It's a graphic 3 mile tea similar to an Apple or Pear in weight and sweetness.
I will definitely be trying to get back here to check out a couple more of...
