Update: Since I left my negative review a few months ago, this place has really turned around. We decided to give it another try (mostly because we’re lazy and it’s less than a mile from our house), and to our pleasant surprise, the experience was great! Friendly and fast service and delicious food. So we tried it again…and again…and it was better and better each time. So if you were turned off by Our Brunch Spot in the past, I highly recommend trying them again. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised! (Bonus: the prices are amazing - where else can you get two huge hand-patted 1/2 pound burgers and fresh cut fries for $26?? That’s fast-food prices these days!)
Old review: The food is mostly decent - except the chicken salad melt, which is way too sweet for my liking. I love their hash browns and biscuits and gravy. However, the service, the management and the owner are terrible! Recently, on Father’s Day, my husband I arrived about 1:00. The restaurant was not even half full. Three booths were open by the front windows - the best tables in the place in my opinion - but the girl at the hostess stand said that section was closed. Something about the servers not being able to “walk over there” because “it’s too far.” She was borderline rude, not friendly or helpful. We almost walked out right then, but decided to stay because we were starving. They seated us in the last booth next to the back service counter - and about five feet from the booths by the window that were “closed” because they were “too far.” Our server took our order fairly quickly - but she also was not friendly. The icing on the cake was when she brought my side salad and literally tossed it on the table with a thud and walked away without saying anything or looking at us. She took forever to bring our check too - that drives me crazy. Last week, I decided to try them one more time. My daughter and I called in our takeout order about 1:00 pm on a Wednesday. When I went to pick it up, they couldn’t find the order. They had no record of it anywhere. They acted suspicious, like I was lying about calling in an order. I waited another 15 minutes for the food, and neither the manager nor the owner offered any kind of discount or apology. While I was waiting, I asked the manager if I could have some iced tea on the house because I was dying of thirst. She looked at me suspiciously and said “I’ll have to ask the owner.” She finally brought me the tea about 10 minutes later with a smirk. After 15 minutes, she brought food to a couple who had come in long after me. I watched her take their order, so I know they hadn’t called in advance. I was about to hit the ceiling when she walked back to the kitchen and came back with my order, handing it to me - still with no apology or smile. How rude and inconsiderate! These people obviously don’t give a crap about their customers. We will not be returning to Our Torture Spot again - and I certainly do not recommend...
Read moreOverall: not bad, particularly as a nice brunch for adults, but probably not worth it if you're just trying to have breakfast with a large family. It's not a diner despite serving much of what you'd expect from one, it's just too... precious, I guess, and not in a good way. Maybe I just don't have a refined enough palate but we likely won't be coming back.
The Good: This place has a really expansive menu, and the food is definitely both indulgent and Instagram worthy. Despite seeming extremely busy we were seated quickly. I was worried that the aesthetic value was covering up mediocre flavor and that was certainly not the case, even their All American regular diner breakfast was solid. I will also say the menu was not quite as pricey as I was expecting from a $$ rating.
The Bad: Service is fairly slow, and the acoustics of the place are bad, it felt like a dull roar at all times that I could barely hear myself over - though in fairness we were seated in the middle of the main room and it might not be nearly as bad at another table. There is almost zero decor and the seating is not particularly comfortable.
The Ugly: (weird rant incoming) Common sense is not a strong suit of the staff. My 9 year old daughter ordered an apple juice when our drink orders were taken. The server did not clarify if she wanted a child's size or adult size, she was just brought an adult size glass of apple juice. She then ordered off the kids menu, which those are supposed to include an apple juice or milk. When the check came, I was charged the nearly $5 for the adult apple juice. When I asked why it was not included with the kids menu item, it was explained to me that only a kids size apple juice would be included with the kids meal. When I asked why was my obvious child brought an adult apple juice that would not be included with the meal she'd likely order, the server offered to go get a child's apple juice in addition to the adult one that was already drank. After some back and forth I finally threw up my hands and said don't worry about it, I'll just pay and we'll go. A supervisor of some stripe approached our table, and I had THE EXACT SAME CONVERSATION resulting in the same offer of MORE APPLE JUICE. I declined, paid, and left. Maybe it's just me but I feel like at some point after I had explained the situation as a first time customer who did not magically know the kids meal included only a kids juice, an offer should have been made to just comp the $5 juice off my $70+ check for the misunderstanding, especially since they were happy to just pour more apple juice I already explained was not wanted. It's five bucks, it's not a big deal, but the fact that at no point was the comp offered once it became clear that the issue was not needing more juice just really struck me as odd. I hope that's not super petty but it felt like a really obvious solution for a relatively small problem that never entered the...
Read moreAfter all of the great reviews, I had to try this restaurant. The positives: the young lady at the front desk is a ray of sunshine. She was fantastic! There was a 45 minute wait, but that wasn’t an issue bc it’s Father’s Day. They have a great outdoor area to wait in. Okay...now for the rest. We had no less than 8 different flies at our booth, one was dead on the window when we sat down. Our waitress was nice but seemed a bit overwhelmed (probably bc of the crowd). The food was average. There were 5 of us. My daughter’s pancake was super dry, but she loved the hash browns and bacon. My sons’ orders were good for them. My husband loved the grits. My food was a disappointment. I got the skillet bowl with steak. I asked for my steak to be cooked to a medium temp. It was clearly well done (in strips so anyone could see it was WAY over if they just looked). I didn’t complain but didn’t eat the steak. It was too tough. The eggs were bland. As we were offered to-go containers while we were still eating, I let our waitress know I didn’t need one bc my steak was over. I had just pushed it aside and was eating my hash, eggs, spinach. She took the whole dish, as I was saying “don’t worry about it.” I appreciate her trying to fix it, but she came back and said the manager was going to just take half off. I honestly didn’t want a discount; I wanted the food I ordered. It was also disappointing because I was still eating the rest of the bowl when she took it. So I ended up only getting to eat half of my eggs and hash, and no meat, and receiving half off of my meal. So...I’m still hungry. Oh, and the manager never came to the table. Lastly, I had a Groupon for 20% cash back on our meal. I asked the waitress what I needed to do to claim it and her answer was “I really don’t know. I’d have to ask the manager and he’s on a call,” and then she took my card and charged it. Afterward, she came back and said it would’ve had to have been linked before she charged the card. She didn’t even apologize. Not thrilled about this visit. I don’t know if we’d return. $65 for a subpar meal...
