We have been sampling the restaurant options in Fortville as we really like this area and were interested in trying this place after a very favorable experience at FoxGardin. If you haven't been to the area, parking is pretty convenient as there are plenty of street spaces in addition to a few lots nearby.
This particular establishment is next to the railroad tracks that run across the main drag. They offer some tables to eat outside near the tracks, but the weather was a little questionable this particular evening so we dined in. We were taken to a high top table with booth seating on one side and chairs on the aisle side. The chairs were a little challenging to move as I believe they had rubber or something tacky at the bottom of their legs, so not the easiest to get into and move toward the table. They push the QR code to access their menu, but we requested hard copies since most of us didn't have phones on us. It was kind of dark inside, which made it tough to read the menu since I forgot my cheaters.
My wife and I split the Fried Green Tomatoes ($10) as I had never had them before. They had a nice crunchy exterior and good flavor inside. My wife ordered the Roasted Brussels Salad ($15 - large). It looked good, but she said the the Brussels were somewhat sparse in spite of being the name of the salad. She also wanted a cider, but the only dry option was Ash & Elm in a can ($8). I selected the Monday special, which said "Fortville Burgers + House Beer" for $15. Since it said burgers in a plural sense, I assumed it meant you could select a burger from their menu options, but sadly I was informed it only applied to the Fortville Burger (beef, bacon, American cheese, ranch shoestrings, garden, ranch) itself. I decided to stick with the deal anyway. The burger was decent sized and tasted fine, but wasn't the Veggie option that I was more interested in on their menu. The fries were better than average in appearance and texture, although they needed a little more seasoning. I did like my beer, Deduction, which was the least hoppy dark beer that they offered.
For some reason, I was charged $15.50 for my special, but didn't want to ask. As some places are doing now, you complete your credit card transaction for the bill by selecting tip and receipt options as the server holds a phone for you. Kind of awkward and not my favorite, but it's fine.
So overall, it was fine. I wouldn't be opposed to returning, but there are other options I...
Read moreI wanted to love Taxman’s. A small, locally sourced restaurant with local brews sounds right up my alley. However, the service was absolutely a disappointment. We walked in and waited about 15 minutes before we were even greeted. Once, the hostess came to the stand she asked if we had reservations. I said no and she sniffed while telling me we would have to wait for her to clean off tables. Cue another 10 minutes and she finally brought us into a virtually empty dining room. We waited another 10 or so minutes before anyone came to greet us at our table. There weren’t enough glasses for the water (we had to ask for more). The pretzel and cheese was delicious. We gobbled it up quickly. We ordered food and the drinks were delivered ($3 for a small glass full of ice and maybe 1/2 can of soda). Finally the food came out and it was pretty good. But, no condiments were offered (no ketchup for fries and no salt). The server didn’t come check on us for a long while. When she did, we asked for refills for drinks (they weren’t offered). We had to keep asking her for things one at a time because every time we asked for something, she would run off before we could get the rest out. One thing we did get promptly without asking for was our bill and upon inspection, found that the drinks were not free refills. We checked on the menu and that was not listed. We also asked the server and she told us they weren’t free. I felt that she should have let us know when we asked or when we ordered that sodas weren’t free refills. Usually if that is the case, it is noted in the menu. The costs were crazy high for food that was pretty good but the service was majorly lacking. It seemed to be an imposition for us to be there. I...
Read moreMy wife and I drove 30 miles from Westfield to eat at Tax Man, we wanted to go somewhere we hadn’t been in a long time. Our past experiences were always good, not today. We went in and stood by the hostess stand for like 6 to 8 mins. We saw the female bartender actually look at us 4 different times but to no avail to help us out in anyway. We finally grabbed a server walking by who was so kind to assist us but did say she doesn’t hostess but did seat us outside per our request. She went on to explain they were short handed on servers and that there manager was helping them out. After seating us she said the same manager assisting them would be out server. Sounded good but a total joke on us!!! After 9 to 12 mins. no one ever came by, but the female bartender who ignored us actually seated others back behind us with actual water and utensils which we had none of. Considering it was 12:45 and we had yet to eat anything for the day we decided that it wasn’t a good situation and If we stayed what kind of positive results could there be. So we got up and walked to our car parked a block away and it was too funny as we pulled away in front of the restaurant we see the manager who I saw while we waited patiently at the hostess desk whom I saw working in the kitchen look out the side door towards where we had been 10 mins. ago and turn his head and no One to be seen and go back inside!!! THIS PLACE IS A JOKE, BURGER KING IS A BETTER CHOICE!! FYI, we decided to go to Eddies at Geist Resevoir and the service and food was perfect! Lesson learned go to the places that you know and trust. They won’t let you down. I won’t be picking up tax man beer for my weekends at lake Monroe on our boat as I have done for...
