This was me and my family’s first time at Butterfish. A lot of my friends had recommended it so we decided to try it out. When I came in, it was very busy, which I took as a good sign, but while we were standing in line, I had a hard time reading the bottom of the menu because there were things blocking it. We decided to build our own bowls and after we had chosen our sauce I saw the employee helping us add something into all of our proteins without asking. I asked them what that was and they said it was lemon juice. I was very upset that they didn’t ask before adding that in because my son is severely allergic to lemon. The employee apologized and said they are required to add it in but gladly offered to remake my sons bowl. I really felt bad that they had to remake the bowl because I hate wasting food, but it wouldn’t have happened if they had asked in the first place. Other than that, we didn’t have any other problems with our bowls and they turned out pretty good. While we were standing in line waiting to be checked out, I overheard an employee in a gray shirt using profane language while conversing with another employee. I generally don’t really have a problem with this kind of language, however, I strongly feel this is inappropriate in a work environment where customers (and kids) can easily over hear. While I was checking out, I decided to try one of their specialty drinks. I got one of their lemonades. To my disappointment, they had filled up my cup entirely with ice before adding the drink. For $3.25 this feels like a rip off since I only got about half a cup of the actual drink. The drink itself was okay, it was very sweet. Read moreI have placed orders online several times before without any issues. However, this time around I was having issues placing the order so I called the store. I explained to them what was happening with their system and one of the workers was more than willing to help me out and take my order over the phone (to which I was grateful). However, a manager was nearby and must have heard that my order was being taken over the phone and she stepped in and did not allow for my order to be taken over the phone. She got on the phone and tried telling me to go online and do what I had already been trying to do for the last 3o minutes! I tried explaining that their system was not working and she just wouldn't listen. I asked if she would please help me and her response was "you can call back in 10 minutes when we are not so busy". I just gave up. Way to go management! That's how you keep customers coming back! (not!). Horrible experience. I will make the drive the the further location on my next order. Read moreI was hesitant to try Butterfish as I prefer authentic Hawaiian-style poke, since every California poke place I'd tried in the past was too bland and vinegary. But my boyfriend kept insisting that I would love this place, and he was right! This restaurant is like a Chipotle-style "build your own" setup, which I love.
I always get the same thing: large build-your-own bowl with 3 scoops of spicy mayo salmon & 2 scoops of crab mix over sushi rice and wonton chips, plus avocado, sesame seeds, tempura flakes, and tobiko, with a side of ponzu sauce. The salmon is so fresh and I always feel great after eating. The portion size is generous which gives me leftovers to eat later.
Service is always amazing, and their employees are so friendly and welcoming. I've been back over a dozen times and rave about it to all my friends and family who come to visit me in Fresno. I just wish they had a location...
