I'll have to give it another go based on the reviews. When I hear Hawaiian chicken it immediately made me think of sweet chicken with a side of macaroni salad. Put your mind more into chicken teriyaki bowls with a side of just okay macaroni salad. I'm not macaroni salad person but I do like the store bought Reser's so comparing the 2 I would say Ono's is a warm one with not a lot of flavor. My co workers swear by it however.
To cut to the chase I ordered the fire island chicken plate. Spicy chicken with a ice cream scoop side of rice and macaroni salad. Now I'll share the overall experience...
I walked into the place and the girl was standing at the register. I stood there waiting to be greeted so instead just focused on the menu. There is a LOT on the menu so would be nice if they did try to greet their guests guests explain their concept. Another woman walked in and stood there for 2 minutes with not even a high so she left. I get it.
The menu is very busy so I immediately went to the spicy and ordered. They have an open cooking floor so you see the cooks/chefs busy at work which is nice. The other girl poured sauces (had no clue). Then when they call your name you pick up your food. She then asked "You want sauce?" I replied (looking perplexed) "ugh sure." Still not understanding I asked for teriyaki and soy sauce and was out the door.
When it was time to eat my food I went straight to the macaroni salad. It was just okay to me. Bland and warm but not nasty. I then started in on the chicken that looked spicy with a side of rice. The chicken was just meh..I ate a few pieces and scooped a fork of rice and still just meh. As I ate most of the food it finally clicked....how about you try putting some teriyaki sauce on it to give it some juice. Wallah that was the magic add. The chicken and rice came to life. I realized the sauce is designed to pour over the chicken and rice for flavor. Then the chicken was good. Really good then. Problem was that I had eaten more than half of the chicken to begin with.
So long story short order your chicken plate and order a sauce you want to pour over it to eat with the rice. Once you realize it's like a teriyaki bowl that you pick your own sauce it makes more sense. Not too many places you you can get teriyaki bowls so this place will serve that purpose for me and I'll try again to see if my rating gets better. I'd say it's worth a try. Would love to hear anyone else's experience that tried based on my review. Was it the same or...
Read moreIt’s June 29, 2021 and the CDC and our CA Governor and our local government has lifted the mask mandate but yet Ono Hawaiian BBQ’s woke corporate has decided to keep their dining room completely closed and offer pick up or delivery options. I went in to order take home dinner for my family as I have done many times over the last 18 months but this time without my mask. I was denied service though I am fully vaccinated and no longer required to wear a mask. They had zero customers in the building, protective plexiglass shields between the cashier and me. Tell me how I am the problem? Meanwhile in the dining room where customers previously sat, their was an employee sitting there with no mask on. I guess masks are only required for the customers. I have enjoyed their food and was happy to support them during the pandemic but I am officially done with them and any other woke ran businesses. You are clearly not interested in your customers nor listening to local, state and national recommendations. The poor employees are faced with the responsibility of explaining your corporate policies while they all are looking around as there are zero customers. I hope those employees find employment elsewhere where they don’t need to endure the ridiculous protocols from their corporate office. Fire your corporate CEO and anyone else on the board that shares the same beliefs as they are toxic and not helping...
Read moreI haven’t even had a chance to try the food as it is clearly not the food I ordered. I have dietary restrictions (not by choice) so I ALWAYS make sure to order the food that’s appropriate for me. Secondly my partner and I are at work, we got a 911 call so I was unable to check my food until now, I will take some accountability for that. Lastly, if I was a person with a food allergy to Mayo, gluten, egg or any other ingredient I would experience a mild reaction at best, but it could be deadly to some. Now I’m out Vegetables and instead of Beef I have crispy chicken and I can’t even eat the 2 scoops of Macaroni salad. That’s without mentioning that my partner also got the wrong plate of food and because of work we are forced to deal with it. Please start training your employees to check and double check the food they send out before someone gets hurt. Maybe next time I’ll have nicer words but for now I’m highly disappointed in the quality of service I’ve...
