Cal's Restaurant & Pizza Express — Restaurant in Garrettsville

Just not very good. With few food choices out in this area, you would think that a place like Cal's would want to stand out amongst the few. Unfortunately they are content with being mediocre on their best day. Every time we try to order takeout, the order is wrong. Most recently, a double cheeseburger showed up as what is pictured in this review. Meat and a bun. No condiments, NO CHEESE, no flavor. When ordering nobody asked me what I wanted on it, so I just presumed it came with at the very least, lettuce tomato, onion as is pretty much the standard. Food aside, I've gone in to pick up my order on several occasions and have stood in front of the counter for an unreasonable amount of time while multiple workers walked past me and looked at me before greeting me and cashing out my order. Let's not forget to mention the slew of health code violations observed just from the pickup window. I am a certified professional of food safety by day, and the things I've witnessed are pretty egregious and the impact to the community isn't a forethought. Apparently in the post-COVID era, personal hygiene, ESPECIALLY with food handlers, is a bygone concept. To me, it's sad. Small towns with few dining options could be a gold mine for a proprietor who knows what good food is, who knows what customer service is, and who knows how to serve their community. Cal's is not this place. The people of Garretsville and the surrounding community deserve so much more. Go to THE BRICK for a better all-around...

Stopped while passing through on business because older restaurants like this can sometimes be surprisingly good and the restaurant that I typically stop at was closed. I will not be returning to Cal's.

To start on a positive note, the server was very nice and was very honest. While the rest of the staff seemed bored, she was actively engaging with customers and seemed to genuinely care about her tables.

Now, the not so good. I ordered provolone cheese sticks to start and they weren't great. They were very greasy and tasted like they were cooked in old grease. They were also served with pizza sauce rather than marinara.

I also ordered a burger with steak fries. The burger was the worst I've had in a long time and looked like they'd just purchased it from the local Wendy's. The fries were also pretty bad and tasted like they were cooked in old oil. I didn't finish the burger or the fries because they tasted so bad, which is unfortunate because I was very hungry.

If I could rate zero I would! We took my son bowling next door for his first time. We ordered food to have delivered and were told 30 minutes. At the 45 minute mark the bowling alley called for us and he was told it was coming. 10 minutes later I called and was told the person was leaving with it right then. Once we had been waiting over an hour I called again to just cancel it. The young lady on the phone was unsure how to go about a refund and I ended up talking to a woman named Carol, who told me if I was that worried about it maybe I should get off the bar stool and come get it myself! She told me if I wanted my money back I needed to come get it. Ignorant and clearly poorly managed. I get being busy and with a simple “I’m sorry we are super busy”, I probably would have waited.
