First off... I want to say that I love Over Easy. We've gone here several times in the past and have always had excellent service. We usually sit at the counter and the people serving us are always nice and cheerful and the food has been excellent. I've written reviews to this before in the past. I'm compelled to write another review, though, because the last few times has been completely sub-par.
To start, when you walk in, there's a particular hostess that acts like she's bothered by people coming in and, for whatever reason, she refuses to smile. She mumbles at you and just seems like you're inconveniencing here by simply coming into the restaurant. Other reviewers have mentioned that one of the hostesses doesn't smile. This is probably the same one. I would just blame it on a bad day except that we went 2 days in a row and she acted the same way with 2 different groups - a total of 4 times with 100% consistency.
Moving on to the wait staff, they're average. Out of all the times we've gone there, the people at the bar/counter are always the most welcoming and on point when it comes to orders. The normal servers are neither exceptional nor horrible but just really, really average. In their defense, the last few times we've gone it has been overly busy. I'm not sure if they're just unprepared for that level of business or if they're overworked. In either case, they get a completely neutral review from me.
The most heartbreaking part of the recent downturn, though, has been the food... The spinach loaf is to die for. The chicken and waffles are amazing. That being said, I don't know if I'd trust either of those things based on our last few visits. Most recently, I ordered the Loko Moko (a Hawaiian dish with a hamburger patty on rice topped with eggs). I ordered my eggs over easy (which you think would be a no-brainer as it's the namesake of the place) and was horrified to find that there was raw egg white in the eggs. The outside edges of the egg were fine, but the entire area around the yolk was runny on one half and transparent on the other. I made the waiter aware of this and he took the plate away. Someone else brought the plate back (I think it was a manager based on previous interactions) and said "I'm sorry about that; We scraped the egg off and gave you a new one, this time over-medium, and some new onions". I'm pretty sure that it's a cardinal rule of restaurant service that you don't scrape off undercooked food and keep the rest of the food if the undercooked part was on top of it. Prior to that, we've gotten cold pancakes without syrup. We've gotten home-fries without onions and peppers. Those were all super minor compared to this last one.
It seems to me that Over Easy is just getting too busy and too crowded for its own good. They seem to be rushing food out when it gets busy. Their wait staff seem to be miserable because they can't catch a break. This has to be one of the busiest spots in that part of Gilbert (on par with Joe's or the Farmhouse) and they're just not keeping up with the demand. I don't know if its the attitude of the patrons that's causing this or just the inexperience of being so busy, but it makes me reconsider going there in the future. I think most people that go to a place like Over Easy realize that they're going to have to wait for some good food. Good food takes time. I have an extra few minutes to wait for a cooked over-easy egg. Maybe others don't, but I wish they wouldn't sacrifice the quality of their food on the off chance that it'll save a few minutes. More often than...
Read moreWent for brunch with my toddler son and sister in law ona Sunday morning. The food was good and it's a cute little place.
We waited over 25 minutes for a first available table and were sat outside on the patio at the farthest possible table they have around he backside of the building. Our table was partially in the sun when we sat down which didn't seem like a big deal but it got progressively worse. There was one other table across the walkway from us against the building that was in the shade with a shady spot located right behind them.
After waiting for our food I'm sad to say we didn't really get to enjoy it because we ate so fast in order to leave because it was getting really hot by then and the shade was gone and we were sitting in direct sunlight. My poor baby was sweating in the high chair and fussy so we were in a hurry to leave.
When we mentioned it to the waitress upon paying the bill she stated, "Oh well this table is usually over there (pointing to the open shady spot behind the other table) but a server moved it and we didn't have time to move it back." No apology.
As we walked back through the rest of the shaded/covered patio to the exit we realized we were literally the ONLY table in the sun in the whole restaurant. Why no one offered to move our table or even ask if we were ok sitting there to begin with having a small child with us is frustrating.
I understand it was a busy Sunday morning but we were extremely inconvenienced and it took away from our entire experience. I'm not sure I'll be back and if I do I'm requesting to sit inside...
Read moreWe had our first experience here last weekend, and I can't wait to return! We were seated right away and given menus. Our waiter was a bit off putting...I'm not really sure what it was, he just seemed stand-offish when we asked a few questions about items on the menu. He also never refilled our waters. He also asked if we'd like eggs, hasbrowns, or toast but didn't tell us they cost extra, which seemed a little "car dealership" salesy to me.
The food was great. I had avocado toast with sausage and bacon on top. I ordered one egg on the side, which was ~$1.75 extra for a tiny little scrambled egg. That seemed a little ridiculous to me, but the avo toast was delicious.
My husband ordered the jalapeño cheddar biscuits and gravy, and this was the real star of the show. Oh man, those biscuits are good. The gravy is quite bland, but the jalapeño cheddar biscuits are full of flavor. Maybe that's the point. If it were just regular biscuits, it would be rather disappointing, flavor wise. I would highly recommend this dish though - we will be returning ASAP to have it again!
I wish some of these entrees offered sides - neither my husbands or mine came with hash browns, eggs, etc. I guess that's just what I've come to expect from breakfast joints, but if I'm paying $11 for two slices of avocado toast, or $10 for biscuits and gravy, it would be nice I to have eggs on the side at no extra cost (and such an expensive cost, at that.)
Overall, I think the food was great! We will be trying the Mesa...
