Hammond’s is nestled of the main drag of the quaint hill country town of Glen Rose. The smell of baroque and cedar post that hold up the red building invite you into a decor of license plate covered walls, signs that make you smile, and tools of a western yesteryear. Today we sat with three generations and sampled almost everything on the menu with smiles of enjoyment and bellies full of contentment. This is not a an easy task in my household. The turkey, so tender you could cut it with a fork, may have been my favorite however, don’t pass up the ribs with their caramelized exterior and juicy inside. Besides, shouldn’t everyone awaken their inner caveman and eat a huge slab of meat off of a bone when visiting this dinosaur themed town? The fried okra was perfectly cooked and piled next to a potato salad that was rich in flavor but not overdone like so many other restaurants are guilty of doing. Texas giant toast buttered to crispy perfection rested on top of a pile of green beans whose life expectancy decreased dramatically once the plate landed in front of me. Perhaps the best way to describe their food is that you will face a struggle after your first bite, “Do I keep eating the first thing I tried till it is gone or do I stop this flow of deliciousness to try something else on my plate?” I recommend finishing off your carnivorous adventure with the blackberry cobbler. It’s so good it will make you resent you Mom for never having made you one like this. If you go and don’t like the food, leave and call your doctor because something is seriously...
Read moreMan what a huge disappointment todays dinner was. We have been coming to hammonds for a very long time and have never ever had a bad bbq plate or service. Today I received both. I ordered the rib basket as always with a baked potato. Ribs were cold to the touch and my potato was not fully cooked. We only saw the waitress 1 time after receiving my food, I told here I was very surprised the ribs were cold as I’ve always had great experience. She explains they have new cooks and would microwave the ribs for me. I made the mistake and told her that’s fine. When she brought the back out they were smoldering hot and way over cooked chewy at this point. Just smiled and said thank you. As I go up to pay for my meal the lady at the cashier desk was sucking on a sucker and never asked me how I was doing or how my food was which they ALWAYS do but not this time. I’m not the one to raise a problem but I would have explained to her my frustration today. $60 we spent and not a soul asked us how we were doing or how the food was. Guess we will not drive 45 minutes Ike way to go to Hammonds anymore. Sad deal I’ve loved this place the last 30 times I’ve been here and 1 bad experience can ruin it for life. So weird not a soul checked on us but 1 time, never even came back to see if the ribs...
Read moreThe onion rings were good and crunchy, my son said fries were good, toast was great, great service and very nice folks...but it is a bbq joint.
At most bbq places chopped brisket is sliced and the appropriate amount of bark and fat are added and then chopped. This was like it was shredded and put in a crockpot. It had a very off putting texture, bitter, and almost no flavor. It also tasted old. I ate two mouthfuls.
The sausage was slightly better. It was served cold and too soft of texture and had almost no smoke flavor at all. Faint seasoning and flavor.
The ribs looked great! I was excited to try one. Great bark and texture....perfect really. However, they tasted very strange and our entire table thought so. No flavor at all other than what might be described as it tasting like it was cooked days before and had been sitting around. No heat, no sweet, no salt, no smoke flavor other than slight bitterness.
Maybe it was an off day and there are folks that seem to love it. We were not...
