The owner of this café claims it’s “Celiac safe,” but there is no dedicated preparation space to prevent cross-contamination. She stated that the fryer previously used for gluten-containing items was “deep cleaned” and is now safe for Celiac customers. It is not. Once gluten has been in a fryer, it cannot be made safe for Celiac disease through cleaning alone—cross-contact remains a serious risk.
The owner also claims to have a Bachelor’s degree in Food Science and experience managing an allergen program. However, she is not a doctor or Celiac specialist, and she does not follow the protocols necessary for Celiac-safe food—only for gluten-free friendly items, which is a very different standard.
For those who may not know: Being Celiac means even tiny traces of gluten can cause damage to the small intestine and trigger severe symptoms. For food to be Celiac safe, it must be:
Prepared in a fully separate area from gluten-containing foods Cooked using dedicated equipment and utensils (not shared, even if cleaned) Handled by staff trained in avoiding cross-contact Stored safely away from gluten-containing ingredients
Unfortunately, this café does not meet these standards. I, along with others, have tried to explain the difference between gluten-free friendly and Celiac-safe, but the concerns have not been taken seriously.
I do not recommend this café for anyone with Celiac disease. Please prioritize your health and only support places that follow strict, evidence-based...
Read moreWe stopped here after Dinosaur World allured by the promise of a kid’s menu, and it was a great choice! There was a small play area for the preschoolers to play at while we waited for our lunch. The kid’s menu had a nice selection of foods that kids will eat (we got chicken nuggets but you could also get a quesadilla), and the kid’s drink size was just right for my kids. We, the adults, also enjoyed our options and I had one of the best turkey sandwiches I’ve ever had! The fries are skinny and seasoned just enough to give them flavor but not too much to outshine the joy of a fried potato. My mom wished her shrimp tacos had a little more cabbage involved, but said the flavors were great and she still enjoyed them. Overall it felt like the quintessential small town cafe in...
Read moreMy family and I stopped here for lunch while in Glen Rose. We looked up places in the area and decided on this spot due to the great overall reviews. Unfortunately we weren’t impressed and wish we had gone somewhere else. We came on a Sunday and all they offered on that day was a Tex-mex menu and wings. We were a bit surprised by this because the name “Behive Cafe” does not strike us as a Tex-Mex type place but ok that’s cool. However, the food was nothing special and a little underwhelming. My husband especially did not like the nacho plate he ordered. We read on their website after the fact that they are...
