If I could give this place a zero I would as I have never been so astounded by the treatment that my mom, husband and I received on Mother’s Day. Walked into La Cabañita at around 4:00 and since there were only 3 of us they do not need reservations so we were told that there would be a 30 minute wait which was not a problem however my mom really wanted to sit in the area above so we waited and got the table she wanted. Our server came to the table and seemed liked he was disinterested, inattentive and no personality literally like he hated his job and us as well. So my husband and I ordered a drink and my mom had tea. It didn’t seem that busy but it took a while for him to come back. When he did we decided to order. My mom has terrible crippling hands and asked if she could have a teaspoon and also a side of sour cream to go with her meal. Simple request you would think… I ordered a vegetarian taco and said we would like a side order of guacamole. My husband ordered his meal and the waiter seemed very put out by us. So we waited and waited and finally our meal comes my mom did not get her sour cream or the spoon and my taco was literally a tortilla taken right out of the package and not even heated just raw with a few slices of carrots on top laid out flat and a couple of beans. Then I tried to get out servers attention (by the way his name is Juan) as we found that out from out receipt because I could not get his name when asked. He completely ignored us as he began sweeping the floor with dirt and food right in front of us as if we weren’t even there. Still my mom was waiting for the spoon and sour cream and we had no chips at this point. So I decided to go to the bar and ask for a teaspoon and when I came back the waiter saw me and gave me such an attitude like he was really put out by anything I asked for and why did I go get the spoon when he was going to get it. The food was horrible and the service was the worse service anywhere I and my family have ever received. I had to wave him down just to get more chips and another drink and then he didn’t bring it until I finally asked again. I noticed he was somewhat more attentive to the party of 4 that was sitting in front of us. This guy Juan should be fired! My poor mom on mother’s day no less was very sad about the whole evening. I wished that we had just walked out but we gave the place and him a chance. However we did not tip him! I really would not recommend this place to anyone! The food was terrible, cold and you would probably get better food in a...
Read moreMonday 11/19 Mexican food lover, with my wife and her sister vistiting us from NC, picked La Cabanita based on reviews in the area after doing the Enchanted Lights at Descanso. I had high hopes. Put our names on the list. Looked to be 2 parties before us. The bar was empty so we asked if we could order dinner at the bar and were told yes. Sat for about 5 minutes waiting for the bar tender to acknowledge us, the ONLY patrons at the bar, sitting directly in front of him, give him a chance to get through drink tickets. Tried to be patient and respectful. Not a word of acknowledgement. So we asked to be added back on the waiting list for a table. Waited another 15 minutes, watching the dude cut lemons directly in front of us. “How’s it going?” I said. He responded with good or fine something like that. Never hinted that he would ever be willing to serve us. Twenty minutes or so without ever acknowledging the three of us and still the ONLY customers at the bar as patrons of the establishment. Wife and I agreed that if we didn’t have an out of town guest with us we would have walked out, but we tried to stay smiling to avoid spoiling the vibe on a nice visit. Maybe it’s my fault for not asking him if he was interested in serving us? If so I am guilty.
Food wise, the ladies items were very bland, Black bean enchiladas and a chicken burrito. HOWEVER! the one extra star above is a bonus star for the Chiles En Nogada. It was exactly the kind of dish I was hoping to find. Sweet, nutty, filled chile passilla/poblano under a decadent cream sauce. Lovely, but could have befitted from a few minutes under heat. ...barely warm.
The menu has many unique items and I tasted the potential. I got a taste of would could have been or what could be if the owners cracked down on what seemed to be disinterested or maybe...
Read moreThere are several great Mexican restaurants in Montrose, but La Cabanita is hands down my favorite!
The interior of the restaurant is cozy with colorful murals and festive decor. The volume is typically moderately loud, but in the way it gets at a large family gathering.
On a week night, we're usually seated right away. On the weekend for dinner, the wait is 10-20 min on average for 2 people. It's a good excuse to sit at the bar and have a margarita though! Their house margarita is great and the bartender has a heavy pour. They normally cost $8, but on Wednesdays they're $5!
When you're seated, they serve complimentary chips and 2 types of salsa: a mild, tangy salsa verde and a brown salsa with a bit of a kick. Both are authentic and delicious!
My favorite menu item is the cheese enchilada de mole They're $4.25 a la carte. I get it almost every single time because the mole is to die for! It's rich, chocolately, and unlike any others I've tried. It's definitely different than the usual mole sauces out there, so if you try it expecting it to taste a certain way, you'll be surprised - hopefully in a good way like me, but it seems like you either are obsessed with it or you hate it.
I'd also recommend their taco de cochinita if you like pork. They're $3.75 each.
The service is fantastic 95% of the time. The waiters are attentive and always friendly. I go often and there have only been a handful of times where we had slow service - it's definitely atypical.
Parking is street only, but ample (curb your tires - this part of town actually tickets for that!)
Overall, I'd highly recommend La Cab - there is a reason I keep...
