Café Montrose — Restaurant in Glendale

amazing cafe!! super friendly and helpful staff, beautiful menu, chill, clean vibes. I got the green toast which was the perfect choice for me. fresh, full of flavor, and very filling. rosemary bread with herbed soft cheese, generous slices of avocado, spinach, gorgeous ribbons of cucumber, pumpkin seeds, bit of dill, and "green oil" (parsley and basil infused). the flavor of the rosemary in the bread melded so well with the herbs in the cheese and the dill. i thought the cheese might just be Boursin but i have a feeling its made in-house, it was wonderful. i also greatly appreciate the amount of avocado because i'm not at the point in my life where I can justify spending more than $10 on a piece of toast with half an avo on it!! my only (very slight, and constructive) criticism would be that the pieces of avocado were actually SO large that i think it would have been easier to cut them into thinner slices (but keep the same amount!!) just so that it would lay more flat on the toast. :)

the toast also came with a good-sized side salad of mixed greens that had a lovely light dijon-champagne(?) vinaigrette. I didn't realize how much I needed some green in me until I was literally scraping the plate clean! it is a bit pricey (~$11-$16) for a regular meal for me, but definitely a good place to take a date or to treat myself :) will be...

This is a hip neighborhood place. The locals like it and I like the coffee.

The food was okay but to be honest I was a little disappointed in the food. I ordered a basic fried egg sandwich which was exactly what I got but for $8 I expected a little more of a WoW factor. It wasn't exactly comfort food nor was it a culinary experience. It was two fried eggs on a roll with bacon under it. I don't know what I expected but I thought for $8 two strips of bacon, a roll and two eggs would be more impressive. Don't get me wrong it wasn't bad, just not great.

The service needs improvement. My friend and I ordered the same exact item. He ordered immediately after me and it took 20 minutes for him to get his order after I received mine.

There were some other SNAFU's but that's to be expected in a new place. I'm sure that the service will get better in time.

The coffee was good. It had a nice vibe to it. I'll try them again in a couple of weeks to see if...

Incomprehensibly bad food. Went early evening on December 16, 2017. Nice service but really incomprehensibly bad food - incomprehensible because they were really silly food prep mistakes. Ordered French onion soup to start. It came with cheese melted on the top but the soup was cold. Complained to the waitress who brought it back 10 minutes later, warmer but not boiling hot - didn't bother to complain again. We had ordered main courses mussels with frites and steak with frites - they were served before we had finished the soup! The mussels and the steak were saved very oddly, with each beneath a pile of frites making them hard to get at to eat - especially the mussels.
