We have been huge patrons and champions of abejas for nearly 4 years, bringing colleagues, friends, and family to the establishment along with our daughter (first in her infant car seat and now as a three-year-old). However our recent experience was so abysmal that I can’t imagine that we will continue. We simply asked that our daughter’s meal be presented as a face (she is 3, and while she loves everything from octopus to artichokes, she is still 3). The meal came out presented exactly as it would be for an adult, causing our otherwise well behaved daughter to melt down. We immediately took the plate to the chef and asked if he could make it into a face, explaining that it would be quite simple using the frisée for hair, etc..we were told “absolutely not. We are not that kind of restaurant and we won’t do that.” I asked if I could just have a second plate to adjust it myself, this request was also refused. I politely told him we had been bringing our daughter there for years and it was a favorite resturaunt of ours and was again told that “we are not that kind of place.” While I understand restaurants not wanting to have screaming ill-behaved children, they were legitimately causing that exact situation by a refusal to make a simple adjustment to the plating. The attitude and lack of customer service was simply appalling. Luckily, there are a plethora of other amazing restaurants in the area that don’t seem to take issue with well behaved children!
UPDATED to respond to the below response: First, I want to thank you for taking the time to respond so quickly and with the additional explanation to my review (although it does seem like this would have taken far longer than making a face on a plate or certainly longer than giving me a second plate to make said face myself). I also really wish that you had shared with me the fact that you were training people and thus didn’t have the additional time, etc, it feels like we could have easily problem solved a workable solution together as opposed to our leaving. With that said, I would also like to point out that we have never asked for the most family friendly restaurant. Our daughter’s favorite restaurant is actually Sushi Den, so she is clearly used to eating in adult focused establishments. This truly should have been evident when she sat happily for 20+ minutes waiting for her appetizer (ordered from the main menu, as we were not offered a kids menu) without being given crayons or paper! Finally, we did indeed leave immediately following our encounter, so our child was not “wailing for 30 minutes.” She cried briefly (and quietly), I attempted to find a solution with you, you said absolutely not, and we requested our bill and departed. This was 5 minutes at most. Making up hyperbolies about your customers to try and justify your position is...
Read moreAnother amazing meal Saturday night, our foursome had a great mix of their top shelf cocktails and were already 'quite happy' when the food began arriving. Two of us had the rabbit based appetizer that was so amazingly delicious, kind of a meat stuffed pastry with veggies and other treats within, I could have made a meal of those. Then my lamb was perfect as was my friend's bison steak, both medium rare cooked to perfection. I don't remember what the ladies had but, everyone left full and very happy.
Terrific service by a young man who said he was relatively new there, you'd never know it, he knew the menu and drinks inside out, was super helpful and a very fun host.
So great to have this five star restaurant open again. We had a party of four and enjoyed a wide variety of appetizers and entrees - the hamachi and asparagus salad were our fave apps but they were all just amazing.
My halibut entree with greens and baby mushrooms was cooked perfectly in an amazing sauce that highlighted but didn't bury the subtle white fish. And the bison steak was maybe my favorite, how they get it so tender is beyond me, it blows any fine steak you've ever had away.
Same with the cocktails, some really creative mixes that were very hard to just sip, so tasty. I had two of their walnut infused bourbons, one was not enough.
The service was first rate, friendly and helpful but, this is where we did have a let down. Everything had been perfect, very attentive service without being invasive. And the check came quickly once we were done and ready to go.
They cleared the table, refreshed our water, my credit card sat on top of the check - and then we waited. And waited. It wasn't that long, maybe 10 minutes at most but it seemed like longer, and it's sort of a peeve of mine.
When I'm done and ready to go, let me pay and go, please. Especially since we sat at the table right behind the register and staff walked by several times without cashing us out. It happens so often in restaurants, I just don't get it - you've made this great effort, done a terrific job of serving then, make me sit on my hands waiting to pay and leave. Ugh.
Still, this is without a doubt the best food in Golden, and same for the service, equal to the best you'll find in Denver or anywhere else. Of course the price is commensurate with the quality but, well worth it.
We'll be back soon, I hope they offer Sunday brunch again...
Read moreAn upscale "in-training" restaurant....Abejas has a ways to go before they deliver a truly upscale meal experience worthy of the hefty price tag. We recently ate there to celebrate family birthdays. The service was good; the staff were friendly and attentive. The food quality and presentation were good, but we got the impression that the meal was from a "chef in training". For example, the Seared Scallops dish: the scallops were cooked perfectly paired with eggplant drenched in too much balsamic vinegar ruining the delicate taste of the scallops. The scallops dish is an entree or a "large plate" since the menu differentiates from the "small plate", yet it only consisted of 3 scallops (so about $13 a scallop!) and was served with a couple of small bite sized eggplant pieces, a few cucumber carrot sticks (small slivers) and a couple of taro chips. I would consider it a "small plate" as I left hungry and I'm not a big eater at 130lbs at 5'8" tall. We ordered the bread basket at $7 which was fine for the 4 of us, but it was served to us burnt on one side and untoasted on the opposite. We assumed there was no food quality control as it was served to us by the waiter so nonchalantly that perhaps they often burn the bread in the broiler ? We also ordered the Iberico Pork Loin dish which was overcooked but still tasty. The disappointing thing though was that a friend later joined our party and ordered the same Iberico pork dish and was served bone-in pork. We thought they brought the lamb rack out in error, but when we asked the waiter he stated they ran out of the tenderloin. It would have been nice if the waiter had forewarned us prior to cooking the dish, but he never said anything about the major difference. We told him that we did not want the bone in pork and instead of offering a substitute, he just boxed up the pork and still charged us for the dish. The restaurant also included the tip without informing us that they added the gratuity to the bill (which was fine as we tip a minimum of 20% anyway, but it would have been nice to point it out as we almost missed this fact). We have dined at many fine establishments throughout the U.S. and Europe and we never mind paying the price for a true upscale, quality dining experience. I'm not sure how Abejas commands their price point, and even the venue is...
