Loved it. We had a long day in the mountains coming from Grand Lake. My fiancée loves Mexican and it was her birthday so we looked around for a Mexican restaurant and there was not many…. We live close to St. Louis, MO so we have literally hundreds of Mexican restaurants around us (see other reviews) and generally only having 1 option isn’t the greatest option. We were very happy to say that for the 2nd time in a row the mountains did not let us down. GRAND Azteca may be a bit of a stretch as far as the location but I noticed that in the Rockies it’s very much form over function and we came in the winter which in the mountains is the way off season. The building was small, however it had what looked like a fine patio for the better seasons. When we went in we were greeted with a Christmas tree and 2 hellos from staff. We were seated and this is the truth. Our server had saw us pull up and had hot chips and salsa on our table before we walked in the door. I had a Diet Coke and she had a margarita on the rocks. Nothing special on taste but it was heavy tequila and in a huge glass so it wins. We also had their nachos which were very simple with cheese and chicken guacamole sour cream onions lettuce tomato and beans it was very good. We then had a two burrito plate with rice and beans. This was right where it needed to be if you are looking for something standard but good. Seasoned ground beef with red sauce and cheese melted over the top. With spot on refried beans and rice again pretty standard but in the best way possible. It was whole made and wholesome the rice was toasted and the beans had just enough spice and mixed together.. delicious!!! I had a beef Colorado dish which was really fantastic. The sauce was like a mole sauce dark with a rich flavor robust with almost a hint of dark chocolate..? The beef was the tenderest and it was topped with pico. I would recommend this dish and I would order it again. It was delicious and unique in my humble opinion. The staff was excellent and I very much...
Read moreCame early, the restaurant was not busy. I ordered an avocado tostada with no sour cream. I also ordered rice and beans as my side with some tortillas to make my own tacos. The tostada nowhere said there was cheese on it, yet it came with cheese, and the beans were also covered in cheese (also, it never said cheese on it). My partner ordered a burrito with no cheese, he asked for it twice with no cheese and it still came smothered in cheese. He asked them to redo it and they just scraped it off and brought the plate back to him.
This was a super frustrating experience. Clearly not a restaurant accommodating to anyone with dietary restrictions. After eating and while finishing our drinks, the restaurant got busy with a large group of people. Another server passive aggressively placed two sets of clean silverware on our dirty table (where we were still finishing our drinks) as a way of basically saying, "leave now." We were not there for any exorbitant amount of time. I've never experienced this before at a restaurant.
I've eaten at this location several times and have never had an experience like this before. Incredibly frustrating with the poor customer service, lack of attention to detail on our food, the inability or willingness to make our food orders accurate and as ordered, and trying to rush us out the before we were done finishing...
Read moreI so desperately want to give this place five stars, but I just can't do it. I had the Cuatro Caballos Plate and it was phenomenal - one of the best Mexican plates I've ever had in my life. The prawns were savory with the bacon wrap and special sauce, the skirt streak, despite being thin, was juicy and flavorful, and the chicken and pork were cooked to perfection. Absolutely outstanding and I HIGHLY recommend this dish, even at $23. It is a must-have. My wife had the arroz con pollo, and it was also fantastic. This is food that outstrips the small town it is found in, and could easily be a big city staple.
Having said that, the wait staff was not good. We were practically left for dead after receiving our food, with us waiting 15+ minutes for refills, and even longer for the check. Some other guy (not our original waiter) had to come refill our drinks. It was fairly busy, but some tables got non-stop attention whereas we got very little. A blemish on an otherwise fantastic dinner.
Four stars in total. If the wait staff got it's act together and was halfway decent, it would easily be five, but I can't possibly bring myself to give...
