So for Grand Marais, I will give this place five stars. Both the counter cashier and the gentleman delivering food from the kitchen were cheerful and helpful, something I really appreciate. The prices are fair for Grand Marais, and you do get quite a lot of food with your order!
There is quite a diversity of preparations for fish & chips, and being a big fan of particular types, I checked out the photos on Google first. This breaded-fish style seems to be common & well loved in Minnesota (in fact I found every other restaurant in Grand Marais also serves this lightly breaded & fried style).
Unfortunately I am a fan of the battered & fried style, so I was out of luck. I think Fisherman's Daughter did an excellent job on the fish I had -- not too dry or too oily or anything like that. The beer battered fries were excellent as well -- maybe someday they will prepare fish this way too? I can only hope. I would come back for the fries!
I also ordered the maple bacon cheese curds. Cheese curds were very good, but the maple syrup takes away from the crispy texture. I would recommend getting the plain version; I wish I had ordered them instead.
I ate on the deck, which was lovely, and watching sailboats added to the I'm-in-Grand-Marais experience. Restroom was also clean, for those curious.
All in all, a very positive experience! I probably wouldn't go back due to my preference for battered fish, but if I did, I'd go when they aren't busy, and then order fries & a drink and sit...
Read moreHad chicken and chips and shrimp and chips, each order was a little over $16. The amount of food was ample, 4 moist chicken strips and about 8 shrimp. The portion of fries was ample.
The oil the food was fried in tasted old and the old grease flavor overwhelmed the flavor of the fries and meat and lingered in my mouth well after the meal was over
The three forkfuls of coleslaw we each received in tiny plastic cups with lids had a taste unlike any other coleslaw I've ever had. It's hard to describe but it was not appetizing and I did not eat it.
When we went to sit down we found the inside long counter dirty nearly end to end and outside four of the five available outdoor tables on the deck were dirty with grease and pieces of food, with some tables having food and used silverware underneath.
The two people working the came out three times while we are to grab empty baskets and did not look at the tables nor clean a single table so when we left all the tables had been used except one and none of them had been cleaned.
The place was not busy and there was no wait and the cleanliness of the dining area left a lot to be desired and distracted from enjoying the food by having to go table to table to find somewhere that didn't have the remnants of someone else's meal.
Overall not impressed with the experience and really put off with the lack of concern...
Read moreWe ate a late lunch at The Fisherman’s Daughter located at 418 MN-61, Grand Marais, MN 55604 and it was fantastic! The atmosphere is amazing with the restaurant and deck situated overlooking Lake Superior! For our appetizer we devoured a basket of cheese curds, which we all loved. We also tried a bowl of the soup of the day, which was Lake Trout Chowder and it was yummy! For our entrees we shared two Fish and Chips Baskets with delicately breaded walleye fingers in both baskets and fries in one basket and tater tots in the second basket. The walleye fingers we’re out of this world delicious!!! The coleslaw was tasty, and the fries and tater tots were good, but not great. To drink we tried a can Nixie organically flavored watermelon mint sparkling water and a can of Duluth Cider Gitch Semi-sweet cider. We liked them both so much, we looked them up online to see where we could purchase a case of each. They also sell fresh caught fish such as Salmon, Lake Trout, and White fish, plus smoked Salmon, Lake Trout, and White Fish. They also have a nice gift shop with T-shirts and all sorts of Lake Superior memorabilia. We recommend going between 2 pm and 4pm in order to avoid the rush, as this place is...
