I see a lot of people giving it a bad review because they didn't know it was a new place under new management. Or that they give too small of a side of rice. And that seems like a poor reason to give a 1 star. Rice is the cheapest thing in the restaurant, and you would rather have that fill you up than the dish that you paid money for? The portions of rice I received were not large. But the dish itself was enormous and an incredible deal. I've been to a handful of authentic Chinese places, and sides of rice are never large. The food here is incredible. The service needs work. It's a new place, service errors are going to happen. It's nice that GR has an authentic Chinese option. Americanized Chinese restaurants are a dime a dozen. If you want the GR food scene to stay dull, keep giving this place a one star. But if you want to see it get better, give this place a try and help them make GR better.
*Quick edit. This is not to say service is bad or unfriendly. Having ran and owned a few restaurants, it looks like they could use another front of house staff, and a better knowledge of the menu (the young lady at the host stand doing takeout didn't come across as comfortable with her knowledge of...
Read moreDefinitely NOT a fan! We were excited to try them since we are so bummed that Family Wok closed and we need a replacement restaurant. (They were the BEST!)
Last night we ordered 3 meals from them. Happy Family, Beef Chop Suey, and Pepper Steak. The Happy Family was ok. The Pepper Steak had LOTS of peppers, all cut about 2" x 2" or larger. (veggies in every meal were cut HUGE!), but it had very little meat in it. The Beef Chop Suey also had only a couple of pieces of meat in it, and there was a very LONG hair wrapped around the largest piece of meat. GROSS!
They also give VERY skimpy portions of rice to go with their meals. The meal portion sizes were good, but we only got 2 containers of rice for the three meals. One larger that wasn't even full, and a smaller container and neither of them were full, let alone packed in the container. I don't understand that. Rice literally costs pennies!
Don't think we will be back. They did refund the Chop Suey because of the hair addition. But they are not really worth returning too. Now we have to keep looking to find a good oriental...
Read moreOverall great experience, my wife and me have been dying to get authentic Sichuan in Grand Rapids, and this is the only place. We have had authentic Sichuan Chinese food in Chicago, St Louis, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Boston, and San Francisco, and of course in China. This is the best we got in GR by far, unless you want to travel 2 hours to Ann Arbor. It’s so funny the negative one star reviews are all because the reviewers thought it was Family Wok, maybe go do your research first instead of blaming the restaurant, after all they are trying to run a business, and they make damn good Sichuan! My suggestions are the rice should be fresher, whiter and stickier, and the fried fish dish should have more fish and less fried dough around it, that dish was tasty but felt like mostly just fried dough. If this place keeps all the cooking materials fresh, and clean, with decent portions, we will keep coming back for more. Previous Sichuan places in GR have failed due to poor business, and restaurant then started using old and stale meat and rice, and it’s a...
