Planet Rock Climbing Gym — Local services in Wyoming

Planet Rock is the new hotness for climbing in Grand Rapids. With a floor to ceiling height of 50' on the top rope/Lead side no other gym in the Grand Rapids area comes close height wise, which really does make it feel more like I am climbing outside. The gym is still very much under construction, with large undeveloped areas in the bouldering and top rope areas, construction equipment and materials pushed to the side, and entire rooms in the facility that are currently empty. I'm hopeful that this means they will be adding some additional features on current, or future walls to make things more interesting, and that the empty rooms will be filled with workout equipment or become locker rooms like in their other locations, but it's already a very compelling place to climb in comparison to the other options in Grand Rapids as it is today. I will note, that the the surface of the wall is VERY abrasive. While I'm sure this will be good for smearing, during my first visit it was also very good at scraping up my knees since I was wearing shorts, to the point I am still feeling it a few days later. We’ve been waiting forever for an amazing top rope climbing gym to come to GR. Specifically one that allows young climbers so that our 5 year old could climb with us as she’s fully exhausted the make-shift 8 foot wall we installed in our basement to feed her climbing passion.

Every staff we met was incredibly friendly and very patient as their safety checks were interrupted with questions about their favorite unicorns. People the gym attracted on the climbing side were equally friendly and encouraging.

Routes were reachy for a 5 year old, (as is to be expected) but all really interesting and engaging in their layouts. At the time of this writing they were all 5.7-5.10+ but even the 5.7 was wrapped around a corner to make it fun.
