My husband and I just moved over to the Grand Rapids area from Lansing. We decided to give this restaurant a try 1/20/2022. First, the place is nice and clean. The young lady who took our order (we didn't get her name. (Short two toned hair) was very patient, polite and helpful. My husband ordered a wet burrito, a pork tamales and a bell pepper tamale. I ordered a tamale dinner. It comes with 2 tamales and a side of beans and rice. Chose a pork tamale, beef tamale and ordered a bell pepper tamale.
I'm really particular about refried beans, as they're usually too damn runny. These beans here, are perfect, to me. The taste and texture are perfect. They're moist, but not runny. They mix well with the rice, which is also good and compliments the beans nicely.
Now, about the tamales. ALL that we ordered were tasty. It seems they're using yellow masa for some and white for others. Either way, the masa and meat were cooked perfectly and the meat fill is nicely seasoned. The bell pepper tamale is good too, BUT it appears they microwave them to reheat and this causes one end of it to become inedible because the cheese melts and hardens on the outside very end. Needless to say, I tore that piece off and devoured the rest. Also, try their horchata, it's good. To finish off we ordered 2 chocolate flans to go. We ate them the next day and we liked those, too!
I recommend this restaurant location. I have never been to the Wyoming store. If they can consistently provide good food, good quality food and friendly helpful service like we experienced our first visit, we'll keep...
Read moreI waited months to try this place after reading all the high reviews. We kept it simple and ordered a steak taco meal, a chorizo wet burrito and tamale meal with jalapeùo & cheese, and pineapple flavored tamal. First, the food was all cold and Uber Eats refused a refund bc it was still edible. The restaurant puts the responsibility on Uber Eats. Regardless, the burrito sauce tastes like a basic tomato sauce with no flavor (not even salt!) & the burrito was extremely bland with burnt chorizo. The tacos were large and overstuffed, but lacked any kind of flavor. Does not seem they use seasoning in their food. The jalapeùo cheese tamale tasted like hard corn tortillas and had a tiny piece of jalapeùo and what appeared to be no cheese. And the beans & rice was definitely old. Absolutely disgusting. The star of the entire show was the pineapple tamale. That thing was amazing tasting, but very dry and overcooked. I wonder, does all this food sit under a heater until ordered? It surely tastes like it. Yikes. Skip this spot and go to Cinco de Mayo DT location. 100 times better tasting food and when there is a problem, they fix it regardless of how it...
Read moreI ordered the jalapeĂąo & cheese tamale plate. The beans and rice were very bland (please at least salt your food!) and the masa texture was off/lumpy/gummy/hard (as though it was sitting around being heated for hours, and definitely not fresh). The only flavor that came through were the very over cooked, mushy, but incredibly hot whole jalapeĂąos. I can handle a ton of heat, but these were full of an excessive amount of seeds, inedible jalapeĂąo skin (due up over cooking and its texture). Because the jalapeĂąos are a whole, it was really difficult to get a bite with a small amount at a time. So my bites ended up being lumps of masa, bland cheese (is this likeâŚvelveta?), and huge chunks of overcooked, fiery jalapeĂąos. Most of my meal was masa, ultimately. Really unpleasant texture on all items. And is this mozzarella cheese on the beans? Weird. No wonder the food was so cheap. Puzzling why the reviews are so good. Definitely wonât be back. There are much better...
