We heard good things about West Shine and decided to try it out today. When we arrived at 11 o'clock all the tables were full and another family was ahead of us in line. We were seated in about 10 minutes and quickly had our drinks and orders placed.
I ordered country fried steak, my son eggs and bacon and my daughter an omelet. An hour and twenty minutes later we were served our food. Im not sure what was happening in the kitchen as there were 4 men in black tee shirts and another guy in pink shirt in the kitchen. Assuming one was a dishwasher, there were four people working in a kitchen, making only breakfast, and it took an hour and twenty minutes to get our food. It was unbelievable. I saw one man putting things in and out of a microwave. Sometimes there were plates sitting in the window for a time and other times, the servers were bringing out a plate at a time to the tables.
While we were waiting at our table, we struck up a conversation with an older couple who had been waiting 30 minutes to be seated. The woman remarked that she had never seen so many unserved tables in a restaurant before. She was correct. I looked around and there were tables and tables of people all waiting for food, many who had been seated prior to our arrival. I also felt sorry for this couple because they had waited quite some time and then the young girl seating people seated a table of 4 prior to the couple, when the couple had been there at least 15 minutes before the other party.
The entire time we sat at the table without food, the servers and hostess never stopped to check on us. Or anyone else. Our drinks were obviously empty. The dregs of my daughters coffee mug was completely cold. No one. It was not only us. Again, a quick look around the restaurant revealed the majority of the tables waiting for food had empty cups. No one bothered to go around and make apologies, offer to bring out some crackers, anything. There were several young women working the front and they were all running around, but I have no idea what they were doing, because they weren't serving food, giving customer service, or refilling drinks.
We did finally receive our food. It was okay. Typical diner food, which I love. I love diner food and I love basic breakfasts of eggs, and meat and potatoes. Unfortunately, our eggs were room temp, not cold, but also not piping hot fresh from the pan. Same with the obviously not homemade potatoes. And, I don't even care if the potatoes are homemade. The potatoes would have been decent if they were hot. The biscuits were good, large sized, if a little underdone for my personal taste. but again, they were not hot, just a little warm. I simply cannot understand what was happening in that kitchen! It almost felt like they were making each plate one at a time. Instead of putting 8 orders of eggs down at once, maybe they were frying them up one order at a time? I cannot explain what was happening any other way. So many people working but nothing coming out! The country fried steak was good and a really good size. It was actually hot, which makes me believe that the plates had been assembled and ready to go when someone realized the steak needed to be fried.
Observing the people working was like watching a group of people being told they have to run a restaurant and have no idea what a restaurant is. Like, maybe some weird reality show. We...
Read moreWhat a delightful little diner. You can tell it is family run, and I mean that in the good way - everyone is invested, working hard, helping each other out. It's cozy and inviting, but also feels spacious for the size.
I've been once, but I plan to go back!
The food! We had breakfast - I had Liam's Pancake Breakfast and my wife had the Pigs in a Blanket. We took home two cinnamon roll. Listen, I'm picky about eggs. I love fried eggs but so few places do them right - either too scorched or the whites aren't done enough. So to be safe, I usually just go with scrambled. But I looked around and knew this place would cook excellent eggs - and I was correct. Over medium to perfection. These pancakes were perfection - the honey butter just makes them even better. The home fries were perfect. Coffee was a little strong, but that's a matter of preference - my wife says I drink dishwater coffee.
My wife's meal wasn't incredibly different, but she said the sausage they used was very high quality.
We took home 2 cinnamon rolls - but quickly realized one would have been more than enough for us and a few friends. They're enormous! And they were delicious - even the next 2 days, since we couldn't eat it all the same day.
Service is fast and friendly. Prices are very reasonable.
You should definitely go try it out if you're a breakfast...
