I am having a real hard time understanding how anyone who says they love authentic Puerto Rican food thinks that this place offers that. My wife and I went there tonight and were extremely disappointed. We simply ignored too many red flags. We just moved to the area from central Florida where there is a Puerto Rican restaurant every 2 miles. We were eager to visit what appears to be the only Puerto Rican restaurant in the area. On an early Friday night, there was one family in the restaurant (red flag #1), they do not have actual menus like a normal restaurant, I’m not a big fan of using my phone to look at the menu (red flag #2), The prices for the food are incredibly expensive, $21 for pork, and arroz con gandules is way too much (red flag #3), A “Puerto Rican” restaurant that also offers Mexican food does not provide the level authenticity we are used to (red flag #4). We ordered alcapurrias and were shocked at what we saw and tasted. They looked more like tamales than the alcapurrias I have eaten for over 50 years, had almost no meat, and tasted like they were frozen and just tossed in the fryer for a couple of minutes (red flag #5). My wife bit into a piece of paper that was fried along with them. After all of these red flags, we were simply too scared to see what the main course was going to look and taste like, especially at those prices. We cancelled the food order and simply paid for the tamales looking alcapurrias.
Our waiter was very courteous and attentive, but that was the only positive experience in this...
Read moreMy husband and I are happy we stumbled upon this place as we love tostones and don't have a spot close by to get them. Everything we tasted here was amazing and we most def will be back! When we were first sat we were each given a tasting size plantain soup topped with shredded chz which was surprisingly so delish. We ordered mixed drinks and found them to be tasty and not lacking in alcohol (reccomend Take Me Away & Mango Marg). We tried the small app sampler and found every item to be unique and tasty (2 large tostones, 2 yucca fries, 2 corn fritter sticks, 2 mini chicken empanadas, 2 mini beef empanadas, 2 pieces fried pork chunks, 2 pieces fried chicken chunks & 2 dipping sauces). We also got the choriqueso which was bomb (chips were a bit stale but no biggie). We split the roasted pork mofongo were so impressed by the flavors and presentation. We added on sweet plantains (nice and caramalized) and arroz con gandules (flavorful rice and peas which is actually the Puerto Rican national dish) both were amazing. Yes we got a lot of food but excited to have such tasty leftovers for the week! Highly recommend this spot as our waitress was kind and patient as we took our time with thier extensive menu and you can tell food is quality and...
Read moreI have been waiting 2 years to eat at old San Juan bar-and-grill, I am a Food critic I go around from Spanish restaurant to Spanish restaurant tasting their food without letting them know that I am a food critic. The ladies who took care of us are very polite and well mannered, Me and my guest We're Seated at a booth Where we had Ordered Some sodas. We were handed One menu for 3 people The writing on the menu were so small That you have to bring a mighty fine glass, I suggest that next time 3 people 3 menus, I had ordered pull pork With some yellow rice and beans The pull Pork was a little under seisn't the rice was just a touch undercooked Had a little crunch to it. After dinner I decided to order a Pina Colada Which Was a little Is watered down. Afterward we ask for the check Not to mention it was a little more expensive than any of the other Spanish restaurants that I have Been to So if you do not mind spending a little more for food that is soso, then this restaurant is good for you. We spent over a $100 Other restaurants I have spent $60 or less and the food is better. I will be back to this restaurant in the future To see if they...
