This morning, my husband was singing the Johnny Cash song, Sunday Morning Coming Down. There’s a line that talks about “the Sunday smell of someone fryin chicken”. So naturally, I needed fried chicken, but I didn’t want to do “the fryin”. Through a search, he found Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q. The prices are so reasonable for the massive amount of food you get. The HUGE chicken tenders are juicy, they have great flavor and the breading is like Granny’s without killing the roof of your mouth. The baked beans actually have a little pulled pork in them and the sauce was fantastic. The hush puppies were golden brown and crispy on the outside and tender and light on the inside. The white coleslaw was the perfect balance of vinegar and sweet, a little mayo, it had no onions or carrots (Yay!) and was fresh and crunchy. The BBQ was pulled and really flavorful, even without extra sauce. They allow you to choose your sides. We had enough leftover for my full dinner tonight and enough to share with our friend. He also loved it and plans to take his son this week. We also got banana pudding to go YUMMY. -You order at the counter but then they bring your food to the table and actually hand it out. They checked on us twice and will refill your drink. They even brought us To Go boxes and wrapped plasticware. -They have a Health score of 98 and they are earning that. The restaurant and bathrooms are VERY clean. -The women’s bathroom has a light switch that says TURN ON IF BATHROOM NEEDS SERVICE. That is an ingenious and convenient way for them to monitor. -You know how the people running the cash registers, will stand with their back to the customer, while they stare through to the kitchen? That’s pretty common to fast food places. This restaurant has a sign posted for the workers that says TURN AROUND. I love that! -Every person inside was friendly, helpful and efficient.

Read moreI go to Smithfield Bar-B-Q for 2 bags of shaved ice every couple of weeks. Sometimes I get a full bag, when Ms Lassiter(I think that's her name) assists me, but with the others there you would think I was asking them to shovel the ice in the bag off the clock for free. You are getting paid right? I know its tedious to fill two plastic bags with ice but why should I see how much you hate doing it? Is it not your job? A job you get paid to do? Last night there was 3 girls over by the ice machine barely scooping the ice. A heavy set guy with glasses went over and scooped one big scoop then walked away. He seemed amused by them. Sometimes I get just over a half of a bag sometime three fourths. But I can always tell they hate preparing a bag of ice. I am sure they hate to see me coming. Actually, I can sense that and I hate to go there. Again Smithfield is paying them to do it so what's the big deal. I read in another review that Kernersville was getting a Smithfield. I hope it's true and hope it opens soon. I won't miss the lazy kids on Elm-Eugene and I already know they won't miss me. PS: I only get ice and no food because the white meat chicken is so...
Read moreFirst, this is fast-casual, only because it doesn't have a drive-thru. Second, when you see a table with four local police officers, you know it's gonna be good! With that said, the quality of food is very good and portions for the price are amazing (bring a wheel barrow)! Seriously, we ordered two meals and there was enough left over for a very full third meal. The hush puppies and shrimp were very tasty, but the shrimp could have been bigger, they were just bay shrimp. The chicken was stupendous, warm, juicy, tender and flavorful. I will definitely go again next time I am in NC!
Update: Woops, I guess I missed the drive-thru quietly hidden in the backside of the building. Even though this classifies Smithfield's as a full-blown fast-food restaurant, I actually find this positive. Here's why: The fact that I did not detect any classic signs inside or out signals a desire to keep the atmosphere a bit more classy and comfortable. So I am bumping the Atmosphere star by one which I don't normally go above 3 on a fast-food place, but Smithfield's deserves it...
