Stunning, delightful. I don't know that words will adequately convey what an amazing experience we had, but I'll do my best.
We arrived around 4:30 pm, so before the dinner rush (which comes on quick), and I'd recommend trying for this timeframe if it's your first visit. We were greeted quickly and cordially, and the person brought us each hot tea in a gorgeous tulip-inspired glass.
She asked if we'd had Turkish cuisine before, and when we said we didn't know much about it, she went through the menu, item by item, describing each dish and how it is served. It was so helpful to our decisionmaking, and it felt like we also got a window into Turkish food and culture.
Z, the chef and owner also came out to greet us and described a bit about his philosophy: If people can't travel the thousands of miles to taste this food in its original context, he wants them to have an experience as if they're joining him as a guest in his home. He is succeeding at that! I felt so valued and cared about.
We ordered the Ottoman breakfast with baked pide and simit, veggie pide, kunefe, and the Uludağ Gazoz beverage. Everything was so delicious that I sometimes felt like I was having an out-of-body experience. My sensory equipment was totally overwhelmed with joy.
Complimentary tea: fragrant, homey, and tasty. Our guide taught us how to indicate if we'd had enough by overturning the demitasse spoon over the mouth of the glass; otherwise, they keep serving hot tea throughout the meal.
Ottoman breakfast: I'm a great lover of condiments and frequently ask restaurants to provide a side of every condiment in the kitchen. This meal is like my wildest dream. Little plates of cheeses; a dish of olives; tomato and cucumber dressed lightly with oil, vinegar, and oregano (apparently Turkish families argue over who gets to dip their bread in the juices on the plate); honey; apricot, strawberry, and sour cherry jams; simit (like a cross between a bagel and a pretzel) encrusted in toasty sesame seeds; baked pide (crusty outside, soft inside, a light sprinkling of sesame seeds); and clotted cream.
If you aren't familiar with clotted cream, let this be the place you acquaint yourself. Despite its somewhat revolting name, Zeeyum's clotted cream is... the stuff of legends. He makes it in house, and it is SO inconceivably rich and creamy. It feels like eating a milkshake? But savory-ish? I've eaten clotted cream in reputable tea houses in England, and that couldn't hold a candle to this restaurant's version.
The chef came out to advise us how he puts together bites. Example: crush a cube of feta with the simit, then dip in sour cherry jam. Mix the clotted cream thoroughly with the honey and then taste; it's a totally different flavor, somehow, than dipping the bread in one then the other!
The breads were FRESH baked. When you order, he puts them in the oven. And the flavor and texture (not to mention the smells from the kitchen) are sublime.
Veggie Pide: a bit like a flatbread pizza, but that doesn't do it justice. Like everything here, it's made of relatively simple, fresh ingredients, but in this combination, wow. Wow. Wow. Incredible.
Kunefe: I thought I'd had kunefe before (a shredded phyllo, cheese, honey syrup dessert), but when I took a bite of this, I had to close my eyes for a full 10 seconds to process what was happening. It's lightly savory, sweet, crispy, soft... Incredible. They bake it when you order, so you do so at the beginning of the meal to allow them the 20 minutes required.
Uludağ Gazoz: a lightly-sweetened fruity soda. Refreshing, light and easy. Very tasty.
I am going to be shouting about this place from the rooftops. Go, go, go!
This is the type of food I will crave every day. And it's a good price, too! Especially for everything being homemade and made to order! Please support these delightful people in this incredible small business!...
Read moreI was excited to check out Zeeyum after reading such great online reviews coming back to GSO after an 8 day vacation. Upon arriving I was greeted by a younger pleasant staff member. Then, An older female then made reference to me sitting at a two-top table and telling me the number. Not quite sure if she was wanting me to possibly to seat myself. That's what if felt like. I believe is was around 11:15 or so the establishment was not busy, due to just opening. I then state I would prefer a booth, at the time it was only 3 other tables of guests and they were all sitting in booths. All parties of 2 people. The woman continue to insist I sit at the two-top table. I repeated 3 times that I would prefer to sit a booth. She became agitated because of my request, which I didn't understand why and I quote her. That' booths are reserved for parties of 3 or more, yet the other 3 tables only consisted of parties of 2 people . In my mind I having the conversation why are you trying to force me to sit someone I don't want to sit. It was then that my face an body language was saying . I am about to walk out.
The interaction between she and I felt as though she really didn't want me there and I was beginning to become irritated. She then came to my table in about another 1-2 mins and said do you have any questions. What do you want to order? There was no how are you, no name, not information on specials, etc. Just rush me in an rush me out. This actually was my first time dining there. Her energy continued to be unwelcoming and abrupt. I then rather than become "angry" I asked calmly if the other young lady could wait on me. She said you mean my daughter, and I said yes please. Only then did the energy change for the better. I want to say my meal was absolutely amazing and the chef made a table visit to make sure I enjoyed my meal. I had the steak wrap, it was cooked and seasoned to perfection. At the suggestion of my server. I also had the fruit flavored drink an a slice of the Dubai chocolate an pistachio cake. The deco also was simple and classic. The food experience definitely a 10 out to 10 .. The service has some potential for growth. I have learned that whatever issues she was having , that was her issues. And I will say not everyone should be working with the public if they don't know how to treat everyone with respect and kindness unless there is just cause.. Much continued success and I hope you will take this feedback as suggestions of...
