TLDR: If you are getting something pre-made or simple, this place is great! I do not recommend them for custom orders. I do not recommend placing an order over the phone. Customer care is lacking.
My family and I have been customers since I was a child. So it was fitting that my sister and I both bought our wedding cakes from here. Everyone was extremely helpful. I was promised that I could reorder the top layer of the cake on my first anniversary so I could go ahead and serve it at the reception and enjoy a fresh one a year later. I did just that. I ordered the top layer on my first anniversary and was not able to have it because the person who took my order over the phone, weeks prior, didn't actually put the order in. When I inquired about the cake on the day of pickup, I was told that the order was not place and the lady thought I was simply inquiring about the cake. Weird. So today, I came in to give them another try as it will be my 10th anniversary soon. Knowing they would not still have the details of my order, I brought in pictures of the cake from my wedding. I left out without a cake order, yet again, because the current decorators could not duplicate the cake in the most vital ways. If I had placed an order, it would've been a random cake anyway, so I asked for a book of cakes so I could choose one that was similar. The decorator and the lady taking my order said they don't have a book, you just have to bring in a picture of what you want, which is what I did to start. The most frustrating part is that noone seemed to care at all. I was told that one of their decorators passed away, which I am truly sympathetic of, and another no longer works there. Basically, my cake was out of their skill set. Additionally, there was another guest beside me placing an order because the order she made over the phone was canceled for no reason. The customer care I recieved when I ordered my wedding cake and when my sister ordered hers was completely different. I'm extremely...
Read more5 star bakery and 1 star deli, average to a 3 star review.
My bakery treat, an Italian raspberry cream bar was light, delicious, and unique. As a first timer, I picked well.
My meatloaf sandwich from the deli was mediocre, poorly conceived and poorly dressed, and a ripoff even if it had tasted good. It was ~$12 for a sandwich with garnish and two tiny cheese crisps -- no side salad, fruit, or chips. The meatloaf was bland and cut poorly for the bread it was placed on. It looked like the meatloaf might have been made with a red sauce on top, but you couldn't taste it. The meatloaf was sliced thin, but the two thin slices were placed on top of each other (what's the point?) and placed on very thin, airy white bread with lettuce and tomato -- no other dressing. I think it was supposed to be dressed with a sauce of some sort, but it wasn't. The result was a sandwich that was bland and dry. The bread was a poor choice (the default one at the deli) because it didn't hold up to the toppings. You couldn't even pick up a sandwich halve without the bread flopping over and throwing all the sandwich contents onto your plate. The bread either needed to be toasted or a different bread sliced thicker that doesn't flop in half under it's own weight is needed. I've had better sandwiches at Panera and Panera sandwiches are typically bad.
I stopped a half hour before closing and found the place fully staffed, with a handful of customers mostly shopping for bakery treats and breads. I found the staff to be polite, attentive and helpful. The site also has a lot of parking and a large inside eating area for the deli foods. Do yourself a favor and skip the deli and focus on finding a...
Read moreI gave one star but I would give less if possible. I will break my review into pieces.
A) Food: The cakes are frequently dry. On more than one occasion the cake has tasted like it was possibly frozen, like one of those Pepperidge Farm cakes you get at the grocery store. On my most recent visit, the cake was not only dry but the icing was so pasty that it actually didn't stick to the cake...so it would fall off the cake piece when you picked it up. Think of school paste in terms of consistency but a little more firm.
B) Customer Service: I recently dropped by and asked to purchase an empty cake box because I am competing in a father/son cake baking contest for Boy Scouts. I was denied a box by the manager. Apparently they're afraid to see someone else's cake in their box. Bad for branding. I tried to reason with them..9yo son, Boy Scouts, no one cares about a box, it's just so I can carry the cake, etc. Nope. No box. No matter the price I offered to pay.
I went across town to The Bakery on Augusta and asked for a box. Not only did they GIVE me a box, they asked my son questions about the cake, gave him some candy to go on the cake to spruce it up, and legitimately seemed interested in our project. This review isn't about the Augusta Bakery but I can't say enough about how they treated us kindly but also about how good their cakes/treats are. Please consider supporting their business instead of falling for a fancy name like Strossner's. You won't be sorry.
FWIW my son and I won our cake contest. I'm so glad I didn't disrespect our cake by putting it in a Strossner's box. Would have been bad branding...
