On a road trip, heading back to San Antonio, stopped by Yen Jing Chinese restaurant for lunch. Kids love orange chicken, so we checked the online menu, which was easy to navigate. We arrived at the restaurant at around 1:30pm. Wasn't super busy, plenty of tables, large and small. Nice interior. It has that "Chinese restaurant" vibe, dimmed yellowish lights, soft lighting, bright enough to read the menu with ease, but not bright enough to hurt your eyes.
Order was szechuan chicken (a little spicey, came with noodles), sweet and sour chicken (not spicey, came with fried rice), and orange chicken (originally a little spicey, we requested not spicey, and the chefs obliged, came with fried rice). All meals came with soup, we had the eggdrop soup, and an egg roll. The food was good. The eggdrop soup was smooth and had a good chicken flavor. The eggrolls we're decent, crunchy, and fresh; I would say it could use a little less veggie, maybe be a little smaller (they were quite large). Szechuan chicken had enough kick to keep you awake, but not so much to remotely distract you from flavor. The sweet and sour chicken was a standard sweet and sour sauce on the same fried chicken used for the orange chicken, which had a nice orange sauce. None of the food seemed over-salted or too savory and the veggies were fresh and crunchy, not like they had been sitting for a long time waiting as you would get at a buffet.
The less star is for the bathrooms. Men's bathroom was alright, but seemed a bit under-maintained, and thr water pressure in one sink was almost gone. The women's bathroom was dingy (fingerprints and skin oils on the wall). They might need a touch-up bleach, deep cleaning, and repainting/hardware update/upgrade.
Altogether, it wasn't a terrible experience, and I would go back for some good...
Read moreI can't believe how you get treated the elderly woman that is the owner I am wondering. My first time to have a problem I let go. I ordered Shrimp with Lobster sauce at lunch in house. It tasted like the shrimp had not been washed like dirt and grit. I let the waiter know and got something else. When we were leaving she checked us out and said we were bad for not wanting to eat that shrimp and we were wasting food. I let her know I was sorry but it tasted like dirt. All places have there bad days. I still order to go but today I ordered and then was talking to my daughter and she wanted something so I told her to add it to my order. She said she called and the lady told her she needed to take another call and put her on hold. The lady came back and my daughter asked her to add it to my order and she told her she couldn't, that was fine just another order. I got there my order was ready but let me know that she didn't put it in. Now remember I am Nancy not my daughter. She said that she didn't because she said she which means me had called in 10 to 11 times and gripe at them and then came in and went through every box and gripe. I let her know I was Nancy and I had never done that. My daughter hardly ever goes up there because I do and usually it is on lunch. I run and grab but for to tell me that I had done something that I have not done was very wrong. I told her that I didn't appreciate being accused of something that I didn't and she needed to get some customer service. We...
Read moreThis is an edit to my original review. I think they have two chefs. I went to the restaurant and had an awesome meal. Thats why i upgraded it to 3 stars. Pu pu platter and lettuce wraps. Then 4.12.25 I ordered mongolian beef and I fed it to to dogs after only a few bites. This place is supposed to be the best in Greenville. Not saying much since there's no other Chinese food in this town. If everyone could have seen this place 20 years ago. You'd all think "what the hell happened?" The quality of the food was SO much better. The portions were so much larger. I have a feeling they charge so much bc they know they are still the best Chinese food in this town. If you went to this place back in the day you actually dressed up a bit. You felt out of place if you just came from work in anywhere other than an office. It's just sad to know what it was vs. what it is now. I'll tell you if any decent Chinese restaurant comes to Greenville then they will blow this place out of the water (i.e. pie wei ) Again still very good food, but back in the day. D magazine worthy. Bottom line. If the management is reading this. Have the chef that is good teach the chefs that isn't what he's doing wrong. Or get another chef. If you care about your business. Greenville is only getting bigger and the expectations are only going to get higher. Again, another Chinese restaurant comes in with fresh ingredients and consistency. You are in...
