I had found this place online and it had great reviews and I was stoked to try it. My mom and I both. We got a whole fried chicken, an order of beef, fried rice, and an order of onion rings. Chicken takes 20 minutes, no problem they make it fresh. The chicken was a little on the small side, but that’s OK because it’s a halal chicken And those are naturally raised. The chicken I thought tasted good, the breading was good. Was it the Korean fried chicken I was looking for? Unfortunately, not.. The onion rings, I have to be honest the onion rings were not good at all. They tasted like a bag of frozen onion rings from the grocery store or maybe it’s Burger King. I’m thinking of. But 6.50 for an order of Burger King tasting onion rings, too expensive and just not good. I was expecting Fresh onions coated in batter like the chicken. Now comes the fried rice, got an order of beef fried rice. As soon as I got home and my mom took a bite of it she said it had no flavor. She was right. It was the blandest fried rice I’ve ever had, makes panda express rice taste like a flavor bomb. The beef was tender. I mean, I would say the fried rice tasted bad, but it really didn’t taste like anything. It was $36 for this mea And as I said, I really wanted to like it. There was a nice Asian mom with her two kids and the grandmother running the place. Was looking forward to some good food and supporting a local business in the near future. My mom ate one piece of her chicken and asked me if I want the rest of her food. I did not. I ate three or four bites of fried rice even after I put soy sauce and hot mustard on it it was still not good at all. Same as my mom I didn’t finish my onion rings. I really feel like Gordon Ramsay would yell at her for taking people’s money for that food, I feel a little bit like I got robbed. I debated on whether or not to even leave a review, I was debating on seeing a family owned restaurant lose another potential customer because of this review. But this review would’ve helped me, if I had known the onion rings tasted like Burger King and the fried rice was tasteless, I never would’ve purchased it. I’m just being honest, I’m not trying to do damage to the establishment. If you want better reviews, you have to make better food, and if you don’t want your food, reviewed at all then remove yourself from Google reviews. I’m just giving you an honest review of how I felt. I will not be back, my mom and I feel like we wasted 36 bucks On a place we both really wanted to try. I even apologized multiple times to my mother because I was the one who convinced her to try it. If you come here, maybe try the chicken wings, but I don’t imagine the lo mein is going to be any better than the fried rice. Best to just save your money and find another local...
Read moreWe've now visited GuGu Chicken twice and tried a variety of dishes. Every dish is carefully and meticulously prepared, the environment is clean, and the service is friendly. We really enjoy the Spicy Chicken Burger, which is a salty, spicy dry rub, but it's really juicy also. We've tried the bone-in in GuGu chicken with super fire (extremely spicy, but flavorful. HACK: Pull it off the bone before eating and the spice level is much more manageable bc you don't get that sauce first), garlic soy (tasty!), cajun (on the salty side), and sweet and spicy (like the super fire but much milder). The bone-in chicken is super crispy and juicy, and our kids even loved it without any sauce. The fried shrimp is a good size with great coconut flavor and super crunchy as well. As for sides, we all liked the fries and chicken fried rice to go along with our meals. Also note their sign currently still reads "June Heng" which is the previous restaurant.
The major crunch of the chicken and unique flavors keep us coming back! Keep in mind they don't have fountain drinks, so especially if you're getting really spicy items, you may want to have extra water of your own, though they also sell water by the bottle, along with sodas. They'll give you gloves to eat the chicken with, but because it's extremely hot (temperature hot), I found it helpful to pull the meat off the bone with a fork. I may try asking for the super fire sauce on the side the next time we go, and my husband for sure will get that spicy chicken...
Read moreAccidentally drove into the parking lot the other day and saw the halal sign in the window. I was happy to see they are certified halal by HMS.
They have a wonderful and generous daily lunch combo (12 pm- 3 pm)- chicken fried rice, 2 sides (we got one with a 2-piece chicken wings and fries, and one with fries and 3-piece nuggets) and a can of soda for $9.50. Good amount of food, with a little left over. Obviously it's a lunch special, so not a ton of food, but it was more than enough.
We also got the signature bone-in Gugu chicken with garlic soy sauce. Loved the crunchiness on the chicken, great flavor and again great price.
Altogether 2 lunch combos and an 8-piece and it was less than $30 (before tax and tip).
We ordered from their website and it went very smoothly. I picked up the food, but they had delivery too. Would like to go for dine-in next time. The dining area is cute, with little chicken and burger decorations. They have booths and some chairs.
They also have veggie fried rice and kimchi shrimp fried rice. I'd like to try the loopy fries too.
This place is amazing! Great prices, fresh delicious hot food and certified halal 👍 So pumped that this is in town! Already planning my...
