My wife and I went to Monte Alban Mexican restaurant in Hartford again tonight for the first time in a while. We've been many many times over the past 15-20 years. Their 3 Enchilada plate (called "Enchilada Huertenas"), is one of the most delicious entrees you will ever eat.. anywhere (no kidding)!! Highly recommend. (Ask for it nice and hot, as in temperature). Family business, originally from Oaxaca, Mexico. The head chef Wuenslao is a true artist. All the food is made from scratch, very fresh, subtle, perfectly spiced, and the best Mexican food I've ever had. Even the salsa that they give you with chips at the beginning of the meal is crazy fresh, so tasty, and beautifully delicate (homemade). And the soft cornbread that comes with the enchiladas is to die for. But, the Enchiladas are the BEST!! Alfonso (out front), and his brother the head chef really know what they are doing. My wife and I love Mexican food, and have eaten at numerous top level Mexican restaurants in NYC and we like Monte Alban more than any of them. Place is simple, but clean.. not about the ambiance so much, but the food is just outstanding!! Note: ***Do try the 3 Enchilada plate with the 3 different sauces (verde, red, and mole: we usually get the 3 sauces on 2 chicken, and one beef). Try it, you'll see what I'm talking about. **PS: Important note: Do not trust the negative reviews here. Some people just like to spread discontent. Not a good thing.

The ambiance was fun and it was a cute little restaurant. One reviewer said it would be a good date spot and I can halfway agree. It's cute, but not in the best neighborhood . The service was extremely slow but for a date that might be really nice so you have a lot of alone time. Any other time though, it's just bad service. I didn't think think the price was justified. For a fairly small burrito, it was $14+ and it wasn't anything mind blowing. The burritos at Chipotle are bigger, cheaper, and I'd say have more flavor. I know Chipotle is fast food and some might think it's a strange comparison, but I'd honestly rather go to Chipotle. Of course, some people don't mind paying extra for the sit down experience, but i won't do that unless the food is better than I can get elsewhere, which is not the case here Not that it was bad food, but it just wasn't worth it.

I really don’t know how it’s 4.4 stars. Maybe it’s the fake profiles. I really don’t know what’s going on with restaurants on Farmington ave in Hartford ct. this is the second restaurant that me and my wife been too with a roach in our food. We Really hope that the inspectors aren’t getting paid to have a (A) in they’re window. Plus we had paid $4.00 for alittle bowl of salsa. Last but not lease. Please watch Lina that’s ordering your food. She would charge you extra. Then we had told them that weren’t paying for the food and if he was high. So not to disturb his establishment and the few customers. So we had paid without eating. How nice are we? This is the Receipt to prove it.

Summary: Authentic Mexican restaurant serving all the classic fare such as tacos, burritos, and enchiladas with various meat options. The flavor of the food is more authentic than other Mexican restaurants and various meats are seasoned superbly. The restaurant is lively, especially during the summer, and the service is excellent. Must Try: Lengua burrito and tacos Also Recommended: Gordita. Avoid: N/A ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Great, worth a detour
