Absolutey horrible service! Disrespectful and ego driven.
We stopped going to Mahogany Bar awhile ago after repeatedly getting horrible service and deteriorating food quality. The bar service went downhill after Cody left. But against our better judgement we decied to give it another chance.
We arrived around 9:00 and asked if steaks were still available and after the 2 bartenders looked at each other in confusion/frustration they looked at the time and said yes (The main menu ends at 10p) .
They gave us a food menu and got our drink order. The bartender delivered our drinks and I told my fiance to tell him what she wanted. He literally dropped the drinks off and walked away not even giving us a chance to place our order. We had been ready to order the moment the drinks were dropped. Another guest showed up and he got his drink and our bartender ran to the back and delivered the other guests soups.
We then sat there for what seemed like an eternity watching both bartenders walk back and forth completely ignoring us, watching hockey, etc. The other bartender kept looking at our bartender as if he was wondering why he hadn't taken our order. He should have just taken our order. It wasn't until my fiance loudly spoke up that we were ready to order that the bartender took our order. Mind you there was only 5-6 guests at the bar, 2 of which were friends with the staff.
The bartender delivers the house salad (which for a $28 dollar ribeye should consist of something better than iceberg lettuce, shredded cheese, croutons and one slice of tomato) tells us they were out of cucumbers but he had some behind the bar he could throw on it. We declined.
Next up is the cook who comes up to the bar from the back of house and starts complaining to his friends at the bar about having to make a Ribeye. I could imagine our steak was burning while he was making jokes about us to his friends.
Well as you can imagine the steak came out out thin, charred and overcooked. We returned it and decided to go to Chili's.
Chili's had no problem with us or cooking a perfect steak($10 cheaper as well) It must be truly embarassing that a chain restaurant is better than THE ROBERT ST.JOHN EXPERIENCE.
I worked in the service industry in Houston and Orlando as a server and manager for Disney and Universal and I can tell you right now this place takes the crown for pretentiousness. You can't ride your success on the Robert St.John name without backing it up with a great, competent staff.
I bet you that wouldn't have happened at the Purple Parrot. It seems to me they want a certain type of guest there and if you don't fit into that type you are looked down upon. Bad Move Mahogany. You never know who you could be serving and you should treat all people with great service and respect.
The staff seems more interested in hanging out on the patio or at the bar after work, drinking and staring at girls that guys bring in. My fiance had to call out a back of house employee once because he kept staring her down.
They seemed to have a problem with mixed couples and if you have a strong southern accent that apparently is frowned upon as well. Get over yourself! Truly sad experience!
We gave this place numerous times to redeem itself but its hopeless. Cody was the best bartender they ever had and him leaving changed the atmosphere at that bar for the worse.
I would be more than happy to go in there and fix the problems with that bar/kitchen. Unfortunately this place seems ego driven and hopeless.
Hattiesburg has an identity crisis and Mahogany Bar is a perfect example of how a small southern town wants to play with the big boys and is willing to sacrifice genuine southern hospitality and all self-respect...
Read moreAbsolutely built around a 1900s mindset with racism. Came here and was so excited. Sat at the table for about 10 to 15 minutes. I watched 2 waitresses constantly walking back and forth without noticing us. COOL! Never had an issue in the patience department. But the problem arose when an older white couple came and sat directly beside us and was checked on within 1 minute, I kid yall not!! Say what yall want about me writing this review but I’m honestly heartbroken. To see someone of the other race being seen, after that short amount of time, after I had been waiting so long, HURT! I don’t see color, never have, never will even after this!, but never will I ever allow something like this to go without speaking on! I’m sure everyone else’s reviews are great but this is MY Personal Review on June 2, 2025. DO BETTER Maple Bar! Give a class or something! Don't allow the enemy in your beautiful establishment. We’ve...
Read moreIt has been a few years since I've been to The Hog. The service and atmosphere are still great. Drinks are great. Food was not as good as it use to be. We ordered 2 apps and one was sent back because it was just not at all good. The other, we ate, but were surprised by both the presentation, and quality. The fried green tomatoes were DROWNED in a watery red shrimp sauce. So much so that it leaked out on our table. We had to basically fish out soggy pieces of fried tomato. It tasted ok I guess. Not great as I remember it from years back. I was disappointed in the food. Drinks were delicious as I remember and our waitress was really nice and competent. The patio atmosphere on a nice day can't be beat. I don't know if it was just an off day in the kitchen or what, but as it stands, I'd skip the food and come strictly...
