It kills me to give this restaurant a 3 star review, because the quality of the ambiance, food, and service all warrant a 4 or 5 star rating. The price, however, makes it such that the failure to provide personal man-servants with peacock feathers to fan each patron is unreasonable. If you want to impress a date, take them HERE!.. you know, if they're impressed by great service, food, and high high prices. In all fairness, if you hunt the menu, you can find somewhat affordable options, and get out of there for $15/person or so.. but the sashimi here is priced the same as any other sushi restaurant I've visited.. except instead of giving you 8 slices, they give you 2. Tonight's sashimi special was around $25, and consisted of 6 pieces of sashimi, and 2 oysters. I ordered plumb wine here some time ago, and it was around $8 for a 'glass', and then when the glass arrived it was basically an oversized shotglass. (maybe 2 shots). I've always been served plumb wine in a wine glass for $6, filled identically to how it would be filled with any other wine.. so this was quite disappointing. The lamb chops are amazing.. but again, they give you thin cuts of the chops and only four of them, so if you ordered that $30 entree, and thought you were good for dinner, you better be a light eater! There's also a tendency for meals which you would expect to come with sides (like at least rice to come with japanese fried chicken) to come with no sides. Expect the dish to be prepared as the menu describes it; don't assume customary garnishes or sides will accompany it.
One night I had dinner here as a party of two, had 1 cup of plumb wine, and we ate every item we ordered and were not overly full afterward. We spent $180 w/ tip. (We just ordered from the sushi menu) Tonight I was a party of three, we had water to drink, we ordered 2 entrees a salad and sushi. Everyone finished everything they ate, and were borderline 'satisfied'. (not very hungry, but not full) We spent $150 w/ tip.
I really like this place, and it's the only real sushi/japanese food option in Kona I'm aware of.. but be prepared to dole out some serious cash, making this a restaurant only visited for...
Read moreAn absolutely great ending to our vacation! I made the reservation on the morning of New Year’s Eve for dinner before heading home and wasn’t expecting much as other sushi restaurants were fully booked. Man, was I wrong! The special blue fin o toro they just got that day made the meal very enjoyable: either on the top of the inside out roll or as sashimi by itself. I’d say the blue fin o taro is fresher and smoother than what we had before on the continental US. The inside out roll totally overshadowed the Hawaiian roll both in terms of texture and flavor. The freshly grated wasabi added a sweat additional touch. The Udon looked simple but was yummy, with soft yet firm noodle, crispy tempura which tasted great dipping in the soup, even the plain looking inari was flavorful by itself or dipped with seaweed sesame seasonings. The world famous dynamite shrimp was a little disappointing with too thick of an outer shell. The molten cake was a great closure for the meal with smooth hot melting chocolate lava mixed with the cold vanilla ice cream. The presentation was pleasant too. Our server was also great, explaining the daily specials clearly with prices (which had never happened to us before and we had fallen for outragedly prized daily specials in other resultants). She was also super nice and understanding, putting our dessert order in before we finished entrees since it takes 15 minutes to prepare. The only regret is we didn’t put in the order for blue fin collar soon enough that it was gone by the time we ordered (there was only one that night.) On top of the delicious food and friendly service, the restaurant is very reasonably prized. Definitely our best meal on the Big Island and a great sendoff to...
Read moreWe live here in Kona and have been to your restaurant a number of times over the years. Our waiter did an excellent job on the reciting the specials to us; probably too good.
There was four of us having dinner, three of us had the nightly special consisting of Mahi Mahi presented to us as made a butter sauce, oven roasted, over a bed of mashed potatoes with three different types of Japanese Mushrooms' complimented with an aioli sauce. The picture that our waiter presented drew a much different picture for us then what we were actually served.
I expected a bigger piece of fish, glazed and slightly blackened (over roasted) complimented with a variety of fresh mushrooms. What we got was a smaller piece of fish over a smaller bed of potatoes and tiny little button mushrooms; looked and tasted like they were out of a can. The fish was lacking any color or real taste.
Our fourth person ordered the blue fin tuna (unique and special) sashimi garnished with some type of fried noodles. He loved the taste but the size again, barely served a portion equivalent to just an appetizer.
If It weren't for the Molten Cake Desert (excellent and rich); all of us would have left there hungry in fact we some in our party did leave there hungry. This has never happened in the years that we have been patrons at your restaurant.
Our dinner bill with drinks came to $292 plus a $40 tip. This was not a good food value at all and we all felt quite disappointed in what we got from the kitchen which was described to us much differently when we ordered.
Not sure we will return. We expected higher prices but we also expected delicious food in a reasonable portion to make us satisfied. Did not measure...
