REVIEW: CUARTO DE KILO BURGERS
We saw this on Texas Eats with David Elder and wanted to try this spot. We went to the movies at the Palladium Imax Santikos (Oppenheimer) and were excited to throw down a rowdy grub at this new (less than 9 months) burger joint.
I swear to tell the truth the whole truth, and nothing but the truth so help me God.
My review is on the day of and is based and 10 point system (may include half points).
Now the cashier on the ticket read "Boss" which could imply Manager or Owner, nevertheless, this guy was phenomenal. Super friendly and a very nice guy. Now you will see a 15% discount which is not normal but it was due to that Sunday's movie day... We did go by, but they were sold completely out of burgers. We told him that (Wednesday) and he offered the discount because we came back. I love this guy!
Now onto the food:
BESTIA BURGER (secret menu) W/an extra patty and cheese which would make it a pound burger w/toasted buns (7): Now I know the pictures don't do it justice because as soon as I unwrapped the burger, it fell apart. It had the Habanero Dip, Bacon, and Pepper Jack Cheese. I understand this is a Mexican Burger however the patties were very dense and tasted lean. Not sure about the seasoning, it had a different taste than I am used to. IMO, if it was a 75/25 or 80/20 ground beef and cooked to medium or medium well, it would have been a very juicy burger with more flavor. The patties seemed very dry. Now in fairness, my son ordered the same burger single patty as it comes and his was much more moist, and his cheese was melted (see receipt and pic), but still tasted the same as my burger. The other CLASSIC BURGERS tasted similar and the cheese was not melted.
CHILE GÜERO (9): The Chile is stuffed with cheese and with their house seasoning was phenomenal. I probably would like more char, but this baby was tasty! This is worth the order.
FRIES (9): Were crispy golden french fries, each bite delivered a flavorful taste with their house seasoning. I didn't feel like they were going to be as good based on the menu picture but they were.
ONION RINGS (8): Were crispy, yet still tasted light and were very good. Better than most. I like more of the consistency of Sonic Onion Rings, but these were good in their own right.
DIPS (8): Bestia was good and spicy as was the jalapeno, but the chipotle was 86 as in, out of stock.
DRINKS (9): Sweet Tea was okay, but I just don't like how black tea tastes... However, their Coke products were on point. ICE tasted fresh with no aftertaste.
ATMOSPHERE (6): Now this is primarily because the flooring is mix matched, the dining area is small, and the table and chairs were of cheaper material... With that said, although simple menu, I do love their colors and the lion logo. If there was only a way to highlight that rotating grill (maybe a light shining down from overhead off the wall)... Because that is unique to their restaurant and brand. Plenty of parking and in a good location. However it does sit back from the main road, and one option is to drive through the Sonic Drive area if coming from the highway.
SERVICE (9): Super friendly and eager to please. They offered pickles and jalapenos. They bring napkins with the trays that burgers sit on to most likely control costs... However, it would be nice if tables had napkins available only because these are finger foods.
OVERALL (7): I enjoyed the service and liked most of these menu items, but the star of the show was not what I expected. It has many great reviews and deservedly so for those tastebuds, but for myself, my wife, son, and daughter-in-law this MIGHT be a one-and-done (may go by just for the stuffed Chile Güero). Again, they are super nice and it is something you'll have to try to see if your acquired taste will be satisfied.

Read moreThe service was great. I walked in, it's a typical casual type spot. But I was greeted immediately by the gentleman behind the counter and a young woman who was cleaning tables and sweeping. After I ordered, another woman asked if I needed anything. So they are quite attentive. There was a small family of about 5 (three kids) and an older couple sitting nearby finishing their meals. The Atmosphere was nice.. almost like a sports bar, but not so loud as to be obnoxious.
My food came quickly and as it was to go, it was packaged. I was impressed by the packing as well. Good sturdy paper bag, almost bordering on cardboard. Similar to how the old paper bags we used to get at grocery stores before people decided paper wasn't good enough for the environment and we all switched strangely to plastic bags, then doubled down on plastic bags. Plastic makes your meals soggy in their wrappers. Here the sturdy paper kept my fries even toasty even to home.
The fries were fantastic. Crisp, salty, still hot, and i think they put something on them like lime? Something tangy, lemony and acidic. Whatever it was, oh mama, it made them really a treat. My only gripe (and the reason I didn't give the food a full 5 stars, but instead downgraded to a 4) is that the portion felt frightfully small. It was with the 'meal' and I suppose I assumed it would be medium. I did not notice any option to increase it or (supersize). But this may be my own fault. Even so, I felt the quantity was far smaller than it should be as it felt more at home in a kids' meal than for an adult. Especially disappointing on account of how gosh darn good they were.
The Burger, however, was the highlight. That flame grill system they have that you can see from the counter is the dealmaker. The Bacon Burger I ordered was phenomenal. It tasted as close to homemade as possible, if your home was living with a 5 star chef. The meat blend tasted fresh and meaty, the burger was juicy, and the flames left a caramelization that just brought everything together. The bacon was thick, crispy, and perfectly accentuated the seasoned patty of the burger. The cheese was the literal icing on the cake, and the burger wasn't over sloppy with condiments as some places I will not mention tend to be.
I know San Antonio has no shortage of beloved new upstart burger joints, both fast food and slightly upscale. But I have to say of all of them, this is hands down my new favorite burger spot in SA. It's a little out of the way if you don't live in the area and frankly Bandera & 1604 intersection is a crime against humanity traffic and congestion-wise. But that aside, Cuarto was fantastic and has earned itself a very, VERY loyal new customer. I'm still on the fence about those fries though.. and in hindsight, I'm updating it to a 5 star review because such a thing shouldn't be a whole star blemish on an otherwise...
