My sister and I arrived at Jalapeños on Bandera/1604. The time was 2:35 when we arrived not knowing they closed at 3:00. I ordered enchiladas since I heard this was one of the best places for Mexican Food. The enchilada plate, when served was cold. Had a lot of cheese on top that looked almost burned, but the rice, beans and enchiladas were cold. I told one waitress, she seemed lost as to what to do about it.. three waitresses were standing around and started cleaning tables (we were the only ones there), and not yet three. Another waitress asked what I needed, I told her the food was cold. She looked at me as though it was too late to do anything about it......by this time I asked they put the cold food in a to go plate and I would heat it up at home—-she took the plate without saying a thing. My sister was eating her lunch and I was drinking my tea....the three ladies then began sweeping the floors right by our table and mopping the floors. Really? Dirt/dust was all around where we were eating and the smell of mop by our food was nothing less than disgusting. By this time, my sister and I left with this terrible experience. My sister was paying when then the enchiladas plate surfaced on the counter, still cold. This was just awful that I told her to forget the enchilada plate and asked she not charge us for it..... she became upset and angrily told the other lady to take the enchiladas and toss them in the “basura.” This treatment by the staff was rude, unsanitary. My suggestion, if Jalapeños does not tolerate good sanitary service past 3:00, then I suggest they not let customers in past 2:15. We were hungry and set on enjoying a delicious enjoyable lunch, instead we were treated with cold food, dust by our food and the smell of mop by where we were eating. I will move forward with a formal complaint but I will never dine...
Read moreThere is no longer anything fishy about this restaurant. The former Fish & Grill has been replaced with Tex Mex food purveyor though there are some shrimp dishes on the menu. The layout appears as though nothing changed in terms of floor plan and decoration (or lack of it).
The restaurant is fairly new, but it definitely has been discovered. The parking lot was full when we went and there were only a few tables empty though there were a number of booths available in the back. The tables are crammed into close proximity such that bustling waiters are frequently ''scuse me/ pardon me" bumping your chair without an audible 'scuse me/pardon me" as they weave through the diners. Floor cleaning and table busing was slow to non-existant. Before we were seated, we had to ask that the floor be swept below our table as we brushed the crumbs from our own seats.
Chips are ok, but the house salsa was fiery. They do have a less incendiary version if you ask for it and the green salsa for your tacos is very good. Papas needed salt, the picadillo had no potatoes and was, salty that is. So if you like papas in your picadillo, just order a side or papas and throw them in . . . perfect. The carne g. was flavorful and tender. The taco trio I had ( bacon, cheese, and bean, chorizo and egg, and bacon and egg) were all good except for the temp. They were all just barely warm. The coffee was fresh brewed and hot.
Other dishes I spied as they were served around me looked good and plentiful. Prices were in the ball park for the usual fare, maybe a dollar more for combination plates versus the same food served further towards downtown.
Service was brisk and agreeable with only a smile or two lacking. Next visit will require sampling of the bell weather plate . . . the one dish that usually makes it or breaks it for me -...
Read moreMy wife, son and I came to here on Tuesday 9/16. Now, we are an interracial family. Im Hispanic and my wife and son are African-American. After they were seated, my wife asked for a menu. The server Paola (older female with glasses), informed her that they don't hand out menus anymore and that she would have to scan. My wife said, ok. It's normal. Now, I sat down because I went to the bathroom, when the older server saw me sit with my wife and son, she gave me a very disgusting and an ugly scoured look for after i sat down. after a few minutes later and older white couple came in and asked for menus. The server immediately presented them with menus. Then 15min later another Hispanic family people walked and they asked for menus. Again, they were presented with menus. This really bothers me, that me and my family were treated differently the other customers. This is really sad. My wife ordered her food "super nachos" and it's supposed to come with sour cream, now instead of informing my wife that they were out of sour cream, they took it upon themselves to add cottage cheese to her plate. Also her nachos were too burnt. She said that she could taste the burnt side of the nachos. The beans had no flavor. Over all the food was very bland. 11:14am and older women walks in and asked for a menu, and she received a menu. This is very bothersome that about older Hispanic woman is being racist against me and my family. At the end all the other customers were allowed to from their tables. So when I ask for the bill, she turned around and told me that I would have to go to the front to pay. I will be honest, I left no tip. Racist people don't deserve nothing. Again her name is Paola. Paola made it very obvious that we were not welcome there. Paola made me feel disgusted for even...
