Ever notice how we construct an image of what someone or some place looks like based on what they sound like or what their name is? And then when you finally see them in person, the image you built is not even close to the reality? This frequently happens with radio broadcasters and personalities. It recently happened with me and Sweet Old Bill’s in High Point.

I didn’t check Yelp for pictures or anything else beyond the overall review average, and as I made my way toward High Point, I assembled an image of Sweet Old Bill’s: small place, old white farmhouse look, tidy, country cute, run by an elderly widower named Bill, and staffed by sweet folk, many of whom are related to Bill. That I know of, I only got one thing correct: the building was white. But it all worked out well, because I was served a delectable lunch.

Inside I found the place somewhat dim, modernly metallic industrial decor (complete with a splash of faux old fashioned wood), and a large bar area on one side and a large seating area on the other. My server was competent and polite, and my food was excellent.

The Bacon Pimento burger was delicious. The patty was generous and flavorful. I ordered it medium but it was medium well, but I can forgive that. One thing I really liked was the bun—it held together masterfully where weaker buns would have disintegrated into a disastrous mess. This is not to say the bun was tough—it just steadfastly stayed intact. The fries were very good. The table next to me was ranting about the sweet potato fries—best they’ve ever had, but I can’t say from personal experience.

I just looked back on the burger joints I have 5 starred, and it’s interesting. They were all 5 stars for different reasons. A lot of things come in to play—atmosphere, type of burger, burger accoutrements, service, accompaniments, price, etc. In other words, Boone Doggies, S & S, Johnson’s Family Grill, Porterhouse Burger, Carolina Burger, and Sweet Old Bill’s are great burger joints in the five star range. Yet they are all different from each other. Take a tour. See...

6-29-25 Food was cold, drinks were good, service started out slow then became forgetful and disappeared. That's about the best way I can put it. (Thanks Parris and Brooke)

5-24-25 Food & drinks were great.. Service was a little slow & scarce.. (Thanks Carrie & Brooke)

2-13-25 Food = Green beans were hot. Baked beans were luke warm. BBQ was between warm and cold. Drinks = Great Service=Great (Thanks Lennon, Maddie, and Courtney)

1-7-24 Food, drinks, and service were awesome today. I'm kinda particular about things and hard to please, but Carrie was doing an awesome job making my drinks just the way I wanted. (Thanks Carrie & Ivan)

6-20-23 Rained out of work and looking for something to do so we stopped in here for lunch while out treasure hunting. Drinks & service were great. They screwed up our food order but was quick to fix it. Then they screwed up my dessert order and had to take it back and fix it too. What the Hell ? (Thanks Jose & Carrie)

12-4-22 Home Alone this week, so I stopped in for brunch/lunch this morning. Service, food, and drinks were great. (Thanks Stephanie, Virginia, & Madison)

11-20-22 Had to send my baked beans back to get heated today. Pork was almost as cold, but not too bad. They were very nice about heating up food that was served cold. Other than that, all was well. Food, drinks, and service were great. (Thanks Virginia)

1-19-22 We've eaten here several times now. It's all good. Food, drinks, and service. Special Thanks to Laura, Chrissy, and Amanda for always taking such...

Will never go back here. We travelled here from Canada on a work trip. Was first told it was a 30 minute wait, we go next door for a beer while we wait...they call us 5 minutes later and say our reservation is ready. We still haven't even finished our drinks yet. We get seated, are approached by 2 different servers asking for drink orders. Before we even get our drinks they are already asking for food order and we didn't even get to decide what to eat yet. We ordered a salmon dip that came with 3 mini cardboard containers, one with crackers, celery & carrot. The server who brought our dinner put our plates down but left the empty trap from the dip on our table.... It was a Tuesday night and they told us they had no pork, or ribs. So I opted for the pulled brisket with mac and cheese and collard greens. BIG mistake!! The mac and cheese was cold, there was no cheese in it. It was like a watered down mayo sauce. Brisket was extremely dry and covered in what tasted like ketchup. My partner got the same with a side of salmon, it was dry and unseasoned & we are big seafood lovers. It was so bad we had to tell our server it was horrible and to take it back. The only thing we paid for was our 2 beers and the salmon dip that was also disgusting. Will never go here again, it was late and had to spend our first night at our hotel hungry. I did apologize to the server and let her know it was not her fault at all, she was very sweet...

Arrived at 6:15pm, (we were told roughly 20 minute wait), seated at 6:40, 6:45 we ordered our food and beer, 7:00 they finally brought the beer that was warm, 7:18 the food was finally delivered to the table, 7:20 I had to get up and go ask for a set of silverware for me and my wife, 7:36 our waitress picked up our dishes from the table, 7:50 I got up and went to the host desk because at this point it had been 14 minutes since the waitress had picked up our dishes, we watched her pick up dishes from 2 other tables and give them their checks and return their receipt 7:51 our waitress walks past at the desk and ask if everything is alright and I tell her I am still waiting on my ticket and we finally get to pay and leave This is the second time of visiting Sweet Old Bill's, we will not be back. Management seem to be nonexistent, I also wouldn't recommend taking small children here considering the sexual content playing on the t.v. I ordered "The Southerner" medium well, what I recieved was a well cooked burger with a teaspoon of chili, my wife ordered a "Pimento Cheese" burger medium and got a well cooked burger as well. UPDATE: On top of this review I posted on their Facebook page and private messages them to let them know about my trip. They deleted my review of them as well as other negative reviews.

Location on the strip of North Main Street is this town's BBQ house. This is a very popular spot for families and singles alike. There is plenty of seating inside on scorching hot days. Seating outside if you don't mind the sound of traffic screaming by or the smell of cigarettes because you can smoke at some of the bench seating that is available. But it is actually pretty nice outside even with that! Or you can even sit at the bartop that opens up at the front if you're looking for something in between. They have a good selection of drinks, both non-alcoholic and adult drink options. They have a full bar inside. Pro-tip: Order a drink, non-alcoholic or otherwise. The water is not a good option. The service was friendly and professional. The food came out as ordered. The food was fine but not level southern BBQ style. We had the chicken, it was dry even though it was dark meat. The ribs were great, fell off the bone, but it leaned more on sauce than flavor in the pork. The meatball sandwich came without any sauce, so that was weird, and it really didn't make sense. The real stars were the sides. The hush puppies were crispy, and paired well with the mac and cheese. The best option was the brisket nachoes, I could have eaten a cubic ton of that! Midas 5-stars for versatile atmosphere.
