Urban Farmhouse — Restaurant in Highland

So this place is an absolute gem. Me and my fiance are what you would call foodies. We are always looking for something new and delicious. There are a lot of good places in and around St. Louis but not a lot over in Illinois so we are always looking to find a new place to try in Illinois. He originally wanted to go to some place he saw off the highway but neither one of us could remember what it was and we ended up here. From the outside it's not overly exciting. There is plenty of parking and it was crowded. You go in order at the counter and then seat yourself and a server brings your food/drink. It was crowded but we were able to get a seat right away. We went for dinner. The atmosphere is well as the name says farmhouse style but not in a kitchy way a little modernized. They served us bread rolls with like a maple butter. The rolls were fantastic. They overflowed the muffin tin in which they were cooked in and were so soft and doughy. I didn't realize we got bread so that was a really nice surprise. I ordered meatloaf that had a cranberry BBQ glaze and crispy onions on top. It was like a very large meatball essentially. It was very delicious I also had corn and mashed potatoes with a white gravy. This was so delicious it tasted like your grandma or auntie that's a great cook made this. Everything was tender and homemade. My fiance had a burger and he said his was really good as well. We did take a piece of dessert to go. They have lots of pies and cake in the front counter that are homemade. We got a piece of carrot cake and it was absolutely huge. Definitely enough to split and eat off for a bit. The carrot cake has raisins in it. I just like to mention that because some recipes have it and others do not. It was a dense cake and not dry. Overall I think the food here was just wonderful. We have been to this restaurant on several occasions, however this time was horrible. We ordered our food without an issue then it went down hill from there. We then went to our table and this big roach 🪳 was laying by our table. So we quietly asked a male waiter to remove it please and he did and he apologized. Then our food arrived and it tasted like our burgers were loaded with salt and the cheese looked orange. I am a diabetic and the salt was way too much and two others that ordered burgers were the same way. All you could taste was the salt. The male waiter that brought our food didn’t come back by again, and we were out of drinks and waited and waited and waited until we called out for his attention and he hesitated then kept walking away. Finally we went to the counter to tell her we needed refills, she sighed at us but sent a waitress over. We gave the tip to her instead of the one who disappeared. We then just cut our losses and we ordered us all desert to go, we got our orders home along with our sons to go box when we got home another one of those big roaches fell out one of the bags. New to Highland, just found out that the Urban Farmhouse has a buffet so we decided to check it out for a quick dinner. The waitress was pretty bad, there wasn't many people in the restaurant and there were plenty of waitresses but it took her 15 minutes to come to our table after we were seated for our drink orders. We were just getting a buffet, but since we had never been there, we weren't sure if we could just start eating, so we waited. She seemed annoyed, and she never refilled our empty drinks, we were there for about an hour, and didn't see her again until we got our check, she was the only negative experience.

So every single thing other than the waitress was outstanding. I have never been to a buffet before that I loved everything on it, but this place everything was delicious. I am not sure if everything on the buffet was homemade, but it sure tasted like it, all the food was some serious gourmet stuff. The pulled pork was to die for, never in my life, even at fancy BBQ places, have I had pork that amazing.
