I have so many things to say about this place and not one of them are good. I am surprised that this establishment has four stars. Aesthetically pleasing? Yes. Accessible in a limited surrounding? Sure. However, our experience was absolutely horrendous. Knowing how busy Saturday nights are for restaurants we attempted to call ahead several times to make a pick up order for the build your own pizzas and calzones. After no one would pick up, my girlfriend's sister elected to drive to the actual location to put in our order. The wait time of 30 minutes was perfectly understandable, especially given the weekend rush however, after driving all the way back home and finding her order to be incorrect and my girlfriend's sauce order to be wrong we were rather vexed as we had been hoping that the service and product had improved from the last we ordered from here. Apparently, the newer positive reviews were both misleading and inaccurate. My girlfriend's sister is both severely lactose intolerant and vegan so when she bit into her meal and realized that there was a large amount of cheese that she intentionally did not add to her order, she attempted to call ahead to give the restaurant enough time to correct the order, but no one would answer. After several attempted calls, she drove all the way back, in tow with the initial order, to see about a correction of both her mixed up order and my girlfriend's lack of side sauce that she ordered. The staff was apparently very accommodating in correcting the order however, what I didn't understand was why when she asked about her order having cheese on it when she didn't order it they responded with, "They automatically come with cheese and sauce." There was no indication on the menu that this was the standard. Otherwise, she would have specified. The whole point of us ordering a build your own pizza or calzone was to be able to build our own order to our liking without providing more confusion for the staff; makes it easier on everyone. The quality of the ingredients to price ratio was astoundingly imbalanced; not only did everything look like it came from a can it also tasted that way. The mushrooms were both waxy and tasteless. Are they a light tasting vegetable, sure. However, you can tell the difference between a sauteed fresh mushroom and what both appears to look and taste like a microwaved zip lock bag. The calzones had all of the flavor of a wet sock and all of the texture of a wet sandwich in the sink. Both my pizza and their calzones were overly greasy and the rectified calzone was undercooked with raw dough throughout. I'm no Gordon Ramsey, but canned, raw, unsavoury, and overpriced food is obvious to anyone with working taste buds and a wallet. I'm leaving the rest of this admittedly ranty review as unfinished...
Read moreWe got three large pizzas for $60 for take out. We went in the evening before and the line was out the door. We waited and waited without the line moving much and no idea we should do. In a large group of hungry people, this gets difficult fast.
Being busy is great for business, but considering this is a popular tourist destination, people from out of town do not know how Slabtown works. So here it is: you wait in line to place your order at a counter. This line can extent into the parking lot. Then after you order, look for seating first come, first served. You might have to clear your own tables before you sit?
If I've been waiting in a line out in the parking lot for 20 minutes, I'm not going to be happy to find out that now I have to fight for a table. It would be great if there was a sign or something explaining the protocol, or even a hostess letting people know the wait time or helping to clear dirty tables. Or something. One star removed.
So we went back the next day and ordered take out, because man, Slabtown! We got home with our $60 pizzas and opened the box. Each pie was misshapen, which is crafty kinda cool, but each was misshapen on the small side and each had at least one piece with a huge burnt air bubble taking up half the slice. That's just poor quality control out of the kitchen. I paid for each slice. Look, I enjoy craft products as much as the next person, but I'm trying to feed 9 people here. It's been a long, wonderful day, everyone's tired and hangry, and we want to grub down. And then the toppings for each pizza were all clustered around the centers of the pies, as if their pizza ovens are not level or something. So the pizza parts towards the crusts had no topping. This isn't how I want to party. One star removed.
But hey, after all that, the pizza is good! Crust is slightly undercooked and chewy, not crispy or quite finished, but some folks prefer that (looking at you, Cleveland). The cheese had an appropriately greasy and salty flavor. There was no skimping on the cheese, either. The bacon topping was terrific. The other toppings were ok.
The in-house dining experience looks like a lot of fun, if you can get a table. I don't mind waiting if only someone would let me know what the wait time was or what the local rules are. The apps and side dishes I see being served at tables also look delicious.
It's the only pizza game in a town with three specialty shops for dogs (a kennel, a groomer, and a doggie bakery!) And their lines are out the door, so I guess they can afford to push out pizzas with the air bubbles, sliding toppings, or undercooked crusts, and not tell customers what to do to most efficiently get served in house. I wish them luck and want to see them do well, but for us, #Slabtown just doesn't...
Read moreOrganized efficient walk-in ordering system, and an impecably clean indoor, large covered open patio and a large outdoor seating area. After a long hike, we stopped in to indulge our 'fast-food' cravings and enjoyed freshly-prepared hot food and refreshing local draft beer. We ordered a beetroot and feta salad, mozzarella sticks, double cheese burger, waffle fries and a margarita pizza. The salad was a bit plain, (it was crying out for some walnuts!) but I was thankful the dressing was on the side and although it was a little too oily for me but I enjoyed it none-the-less. The mozzarella sticks were huge (think giant fingers) and a total indulgence with a marinara dipping sauce...I could not stop myself! The waffle fries were crispy, hot and fresh...totally desirable and were served as a generous serving. The cheeseburger that my husband ate simply vanished...we had little room for the pizza, but we took it home with us. The margarita pizza is usually our staple to-go order and is always a winner! I highly recommend this restaurant for a casual, quick bite or a relaxed family meal of freshly prepared (non-frozen) american-fare. Overall, I'd say it does costs a bit more to eat here, but the food arrives nice and hot and fresh. The service is impeccable, with quick, efficient and attentive table servers bringing out your order. I think Slab Town Pizza it is well-worth a visit and the experience whilst passing-through or visiting...
