Great choices, friendly owners, awesome deserts. It inspired me to write this poetry:
I consider myself one of the lucky few to have been invited to a private dining experience at the Downtown Deli & Bakery. “How could I have been so lucky to find myself with this ‘golden ticket’ of an opportunity? I cannot pass this up!,” I thought to myself. I began immediately packing for the 12hr drive to Hill City, South Dakota to reach this oasis of the sandwich arts. The drive was agonizing, nay, torturous, but knowing an experience like no other awaited me at the end of my journey kept me strong and motivated. I arrived with the courtesan I was spending my day with; as we know a distinguished gentleman cannot be dining alone. Upon stepping out from my mode of transportation I was greeted by two of the establishments’ proprietors. At first glance I knew I was in the presence of greatness. One of their spawn was there as well, but left much to be desired. I knew deep down a superior spawn existed, but where? Only one thing was for certain; my life was about to be changed forever. I ascended the corporeal stairs to find myself at Heaven’s door. It opened as if by magic. A booth seemed to beckon to me and my company and we obliged without fuss. I was told to relax and was presented with the velum containing the meal options. As expected, what I witness was truly fit for the Gods and Warriors of Valhalla. So many choices; so many delectable choices! I reveled in my excitement. I toiled on what to choose. How does one mortal choose when present his choice of feast only fit for those of the most elite of factions? I shall not share what I chose as not to sway you in your choice. I will admit, my only regret is I do not have two bungholes with which to eat more. I could tarry on as long as Homer’s Odessey about the boons and blessings of Downtown Deli & Bakery, but I cannot put to words a calibre of compliment this cafeteria of Kings deserves. I beg of thee, visit, and enjoy. 100/10. There truly is heaven on Earth, and it can be found at 148 Main St, Hill...
Read moreHusband found this place online as our hotel breakfast was your "typical" offering.
It was walking distance. It's super quaint with the dining area and the funny nostalgia signs displayed. You see the owner about. Service was great. Had a nice lady on day one (very funny with wisecracks with some of the "usuals") and a very nice man on day two.
Husband ordered the black hills breakfast sandwich and I, the downtown comfort breakfast. He really enjoyed the sandwich (and thought they may have used a sandwich press which made it really easy to eat) My eggs cooked perfectly and the bacon was so good. I took the rye toast. Great flavor. Loved that it's made fresh.
Day two we both did downtown comfort breakfast. Owner came and had us sample some toast from a bread she baked. Amazing to hear that she ground her own flour. No preservatives which I love to hear because bread is "not the devil" especially if it's baked fresh. I took honey wheat and husband took the rye as our toast selections. Again eggs cooked perfectly.
Only feedback is updating breakfast times on Google. Day one we went at 8am since that is what Google says. They actually open at 7am for which we did on day two.
Thank you Downtown...
Read moreBeen there a few times in the past and Food was always good. This time food was terrible and service was just all right. I ordered a two egg breakfast with sausage and toast. My eggs were supposed to be over medium and they were over hard. The toast was just warm with butter placed on it and the pancake was so tough. You almost had to cut it with a knife.
My wife ordered two scrambled eggs and a pancake. The eggs look like they were thrown in a blender and mixed and came out crumbly and in the very small pieces the pancake had the same issue be too hard you would have to cut it with a knife almost just to eat it.
It was definitely a waste of money and time, and hopefully they could get their act together by hiring a new cook.
I traveled through Hill city. About five or six times a year and probably won’t stop there again for food. It’s a shame because it...
