My wife and I enjoyed an interesting and unexpected treat in our meal at Peru Chikann. A friend had recommended Peru Chikann a couple months ago, but, in spite of the fact that we are frequently in the area, it never occurred to us to drop in. It turned out that we were once again in Hillsborough, and the conversation was basically, âWell, why not?â. We are so glad we came in. The wait staff was cordial and friendly, eager to please us. A man, I'm guessing the owner (shame on me for not asking his name) wanted to be sure we were satisfied every step of the way. Our water was promptly filled, and an ice filled bucket provided for our wine: Peru Chikann is BYO. My wife and I usually order different things, and sample each otherâs dish. We sort of broke with that tradition: she ordered Ceviche Mixto, I had the Ceviche de Pescado. Both were excellent. My wife thought her dish was a bit too spicy, and I think on future visits we will ask to dial back the heat a tad. What impressed me was how fresh out ceviches were. Unlike many seafood dishes, ceviche can't be tarted up with a sauce or glaze: either it's fresh or it's not. Seafood, good seafood, requires fresh caught product, carefully refrigerated and handled. The fish in our dishes was excellent. The owner (?) and I got into a conversation in which we discussed freshness. This is when I realized we had the real deal: we regaled each other with our adventures at 2:00 AM into the Fulton Fish Market. That, dear reader, is something you just can't fake! There was a family sitting at the table next to us. They had ordered picarones as a dessert. Intrigued, I asked what they were. Throwing caution to the wind, we placed an order for picarones. Heavenly! It was explained to us that African slaves made these donut shaped treats of pumpkin and sweet potato which are then deep fried, to which Peru Chikann adds their own special sauce of tropical fruit. As with the fish, the picarones were fresh and lovingly prepared. What an exquisite way to end a great meal! Peru Chikann is centrally located. Parking is excellent. The restaurant is remarkably clean and orderly. It is obvious that Peru Chikann treats it's dining room as it treats its food: perfect attention to detail without extraneous distractions. The area around Hillsborough has many good restaurants, and many culinary adventures: Asian, Central and South American, Indian, etc.. Peru Chikann presents a dining adventure far above the ordinary. Treat yourself to an adventure: Peru Chikann will not disappoint. Perhaps we'll meet: my wife and I intend to make Peru Chikann a...
Read moreFinally, a quality Peruvian restaurant I'm honored to review. This restaurant is located in Hillsborough, near Princeton. I've waited for years for a quality Peruvian restaurant to come to this area..this 2.5 month old restaurant has me giddy. Firstly, the restaurant owner Freddie is a doll. The exterior restaurant is unassuming in a strip mall, the interior is clean and bright. I do wish they would up the ante with some Machu Pichu images and traditional Peruvian music but I digress as its the food worth writing about. We ordered chicha morada (purple corn traditional beverage filled with apple pieces) papa la huancaina, papa relleno, skirt steak (Entrana) accompanied by chimchurri sauce with salad, beans and rice and picarrone for dessert. The portions are great and the taste was fabulous. They understand how to use aji without overpowering the food. I ordered my skirt steak well done, it did not disappoint. The white rice was slightly undercooked. Overall, very impressed with this little restaurant.Update**- returned to my new favorite restaurant and encountered the following: lack of AC, my ceviche had very little acidity and the roasted chicken was bland. Discussed with Freddie, as these are modifiable factors for a new restaurant. The restaurant was packed with a very large party- so hoping this restaurant can pull through as the...
Read moreStaff was very friendly but Food was ehh ok at best and a bit overpriced for what youâre getting. If you havenât had better then you would think this place is great but itâs not the experience I had. I got a mixed Chaufa which traditionally comes with beef, chicken, and shrimp but I didnât want seafood so you would think they would give you extra meat or chicken in place of the seafood but they didnât and it cost $30!!!! Not only that but the portion size was literally only enough for one person and I ordered this thinking Iâd be able to share it with my partner (like we usually would at any other authentic Peruvian restaurant) If you go to ANY Peruvian restaurant you would know the rice portions are typically huge and not even 2 people can always finish it - well not here. The ceviche needed salt, did not have enough lime, and for some reason the juice was yellow - ceviche never has a yellow color so i donât know what that is about. Additionally, I ordered 1/4 chicken and asked for a thigh but they gave me a breast which I donât like so I didnât eat it. At the end I spent a ridiculous $80 on blah food and definitely regretting it. I...
