The only time I've ever heard of a Mexican restaurant charging for chips and salsa is when you don't order any other food. I guess I should have suspected something when the server asked if I wanted chips and salsa. I thought it was an odd question but shrugged it off. I won't bash the chips and salsa because I recognize that it may be only my preference they didn't meet. I prefer thin, crispy chips where theirs are thick and hard. I wasn't too impressed by the salsa either but, again, that may just be me.
I ordered the Kiosko which is tacos and enchiladas with rice and beans. The enchiladas were inedible with a terrible, bitter red sauce. I couldn't eat them and I love enchiladas. I order them everywhere I go.
The tacos had only meat in them with some iceberg lettuce and a slice of tomato on the side. They were the highlight of the show. A very dim highlight. I was at least able to eat them.
The rice was bland and overcooked to the point that it felt like unappetizing mush in my mouth. Again I couldn't eat it. I subbed charro beans for the refried beans and I regretted that decision. They were not good but I was hungry so I choked most of it down.
The server never came back to the table so eventually I went to the front to ask for a bill. When she told me it was $21.05 I stopped her and told her that wasn't right. She immediately responded that I got chips and salsa.
This tells me that they are aware that charging for chips and salsa is an unexpected thing for their customers. Free chips and salsa is so universal that if you are charging for it you should warn people there is a charge. If you don't then you are taking advantage of your customers and that's a great way to never get repeat business.
Of course, that's assuming that you don't scare them away with badly flavored, ill-prepared Mexican-food staples like tacos...
Read moreI walked in here because the reataurant next door had a waiting period. Best decision ever. They have a diverse menu that includes seafood. Welcomed with chips and three salsas, I started off with a tostada de aguachile rojo. This is shrimp marinated in a sauce made with lime, water and chiltepin. It is pure fire and only for the well trained. My mouth waters again as I type. Cucumber and red onion provide texture and flavors. Chiles rellenos were my main course, available stuffed with meat or cheese, I opted for the meat. They are served open and on white cheese sauce. Different from any chile relleno I've had, it was a very pleasant surprise. Washed everything down with a couple of XX lager. Charming and efficient server. Unexpected find in Hobbs. Sure to return. So I did for breakfast. I asked for my eggs over medium. She said sunny side up. No, I want my yolk runny and the white cooked. "That's sunny side up." She brought them sunny side up, raw yolk, runny white. Revolting to me. Minus three stars for service. Anyway, she won't prevent me from going back for more aguachile. Went back a month later and tried their yellow aguachile, mango and habanero based. Very hot but not like...
Read moreFirst, I would like to preface that the food was delicious and me and my family had no issues with the preparation of our meals.
Unfortunately, I must comment that the staff and pricing of Habaneros is quite disappointing and outrageous.
For instance, our server failed to tend to our table, as we had to keep calling someone over to help us, even at checkout.
Moreover, the restaurant does not have listed the pricing for multiple items, including whether or not they charge for refills or a pitcher of tea. As previous reviews have stated, one glass of tea is almost $3. Based upon my receipt, they actually charged $3.75 a cup!! We only had 5 cups and requested for a pitcher to refill our drinks and they claimed that the pitcher was equivalent to 9 cups total, which came out to $34!
I could never understand under any circumstance why 1 pitcher of tea would come out to almost $35 and the fact that we were charged for 9 cups of tea when we only had 5.
Overall, I would suggest anyone who is interested in eating at this establishment to reconsider your options and be aware of their suspicious pricing.
My advice to the staff and management at Habaneros: be transparent about...
