Thus far, 2018 is shaping up to be the year of the sandwich for me. I've been trying out various shops in Sugar House and Millcreek with great results. Yet, the other day I went to a Subway for the first time in probably six months? Looking for something close and open on Sunday. And I remembered why I've chosen to avoid it for so long. After having a variety of bomb sandwiches, particularly Banh Mi, I realized at this point I just can't go back. Oh Mai is one of those places that makes me scratch my head in line at Subway thinking, "wait, why am I doing this?"
On my way back from an appointment today, I suddenly recalled my last visit to Oh Mai several years ago. It was even better than I remembered. This time around I went for the S8, Garlic-Butter Ribeye Steak. ( Mayo, lettuce, cucumber, cilantro, jalapeño, tomatoes, and black pepper onion vinaigrette.) Although to be completely honest, there's not a single sandwich on that menu that doesn't sound heavenly.
What makes this place so continuously great, is the quality of the ingredients. Everything not only looks fresh, but it actually TASTES fresh. Flashback to stale subway bread, I felt like I was being spoiled when I had that first bite.
The best part about Vietnamese, and most non-American food for that matter, is just the perfect execution of spices. It's not the type of sandwich that leaves you feeling weighed down for the rest of the day, yet it is perfectly filling.
In my humble opinion, is there really anything else one could desire from a sandwich?
If that wasn't motivation enough, how about the fact that it's actually affordable, fast food comparable pricing?
Only one gripe, is the parking situation is certifiably awful. But I couldn't care less in that regard. I'd walk 5 miles...
Read moreI've been meaning to try this place for years after seeing it on Triple-D. I had high expectations based on that spot with Guy Fieri. Unfortunately, I encountered the same problem I seem to with all Pho spots outside my hometown of Seattle. My expectations are based on the average quality of the pho available for purchase in the greater Seattle area, the majority of which is pretty good. My new city of Las Vegas struggles mightily with their pho quality and the good spots are few and far between. The same holds true for the Banh Mi I encounter outside of WA. That usually tastes OK but the amount of meat on them is minute comparatively.
As for the pho, maybe this was an off day for them but the flavor was not strong and the broth was pretty weak. The quantity was not great either. I can get an extra large bowl at my favorite spot in WA for around $8 and when I started eating there 15 years ago, it was under $6. It was enough to fill me up. This place charges a lot more for a lot less. I'm so hard up for pho, I'm willing to overlook price for quality but this was not the quality I expected.
The Banh Mi flavors were pretty solid but it had about half the meat I would have gotten at my favorite banh mi spot in WA(different from my favorite pho) and last time I ate there, the sandwich was around $6. If it was an off day, I won't know. I don't live in UT but I am there frequently and I will spend my food money at places that are consistently good. there are a lot of them, which is why Triple-D is there...
Read moreOmg worst Pho I've ever had in my life. I seriously don't know how this restaurant could possibly get 4.4 rating or those 5* reviews. Maybe all you Hispanic and Caucasian don't know what real authentic Vietnamese food taste like so you think this is good, but my goodness let me tell you the broth was beyond basic. I seriously don't know how they could possibly make something like this and charge people for it. Bruhhhh Pho broth isn't easy to make and it takes a long time, everytime I make it, it took me like 4 hrs (at least). But nowadays you can go to Asian market and buy "Quốc Việt" Pho soup base and you adjust everything to your liking and your broth gonna taste on point so I expect a much more flavorful broth from a 4.4 restaurant.
This restaurant Pho broth was just awful on so many level. It's bad to the point that some of my instant noodle broth has more flavor than theirs. MEANING IT'S RIDICULOUS FOR THIS RESTAURANT TO GET A 4.4 RATING. I wouldn't eat here again even if they offered it to me for free. And unfortunately I'm not local so I can't recommend another good Pho place around here. BUT PLEASE SAVE YOUR MONEY AND TRY A DIFFERENT RESTAURANT IN THE AREA IF YOU WANT SOME GOOD PHO (I'm a...
