Our service was typical. Signs on the doors about labor shortage...so I was patient. Our server wasn't perfect, but totally fine. The food was dry. Fish tacos more like fish-smelling dry fried chicken. Soggy fries (fries?) in carne asada tacos. The touches this restaurant used to add were also missing. Cactus? Gone. Pico? Bland. Most unfortunate is that the pre-pandemic issues they've had are still present. 1/2 the guac for the quantity of chips, for example.
Drinks were good...cheap via promo.
For overall experience, I'm okay granting two stars. Incorporating the spend, I waver. It is, for sure, overpriced. Having visited in the past five-or-so years at other locations, I'd say they used to be promising. Unfortunately it's become just another do-what-sort-of-works-cause -theres-not-much-competition joint. Given that, I feel pretty hard-pressed to choose between 1 vs 2 stars...I'll be nice.
If you're after good Mexican food find a taco cart (by the old Sears building downtown!) or visit the local gem (who's hours now kind of suck) Hector's. Will you get the experience of being served, no...but the food is at a minimum 10x better. Enjoy at the local canyon rim park if you'd like some ambiance.
Taqueria 27 has lost any allure it once had. I won't say don't visit...it won't ruin you and a dinner date is still a good thing. At the same time I'd say "run." If you in any way want to enjoy the food you're served, and if you have any expectations at all from the business, you'll be disappointed and suffer a substantive decrease in your pocketbook for...
Read moreTaqueria27 is in a nice location. The interior is clean and modern. The first thing I noticed was there were very few people in the restaurant. There is a sign that said "Please wait to be seated". It took a while for someone to come to the front desk and then they seemed confused while I was waiting. I eventually got a seat.
I ordered the Fundido to start. The cheese and chips were both a little bland and a few of the chips were chewy instead of crisp and a few of my chips were over cooked almost like they had been fried twice. The cheese did come with a small tea light to keep it warm which was nice.
I then order the pork and chorizo tacos. The pork taco was great. The pork was tender, the pickled onions added nice acidity and the cilantro gave it a fresh taste.
I did not like the Chorizo taco as much. The chipotle crema seemed to taste just like chipotle powder. This taco also had the pickled onions and cilantro, but the flavor of the two were lost to the chipotle crema.
I like to have two corn tortillas with my small tacos and think that would make them better. The price was a little steep. This is the same size taco you can buy for $1-2 off a taco truck (and they give you two tortillas). My meal cost over $20. Even without the Fundido it would have been a $15+ meal. This is pretty steep for 4 tacos and a drink. I would probably give this a 4 star rating, but the cost of this restaurant bring a down my rating.
My server was Tara and she did a great...
Read moreWe've been coming here for several years and the last 2-3 years the quality of food has been hit or miss with mostly misses. I usually order the fish of the day taco, one grilled one fried. The grilled fish was a little larger than a silver dollar and maybe 1/4 inch thick and DRY. It was probably 1.5 bites of dry fish, so not even enough to have a bite with each bit of taco. I asked our server if this was smaller than normal (which I already knew it was since we've been coming here for years) and she acted Ike she didn't know what to say. She took it back and then the manager brought it back out and said they weigh it. Two issues with this: 1. It was more than half the size of the fried version so if they weigh it, their scale is broken. 2. Regardless of size it was DRY. Dry fish is awful and an obvious indication that it wasn't cooked properly or sat under the heat lamp for way too long. She was really put off that I wanted another taco.
She ended up bringing one and it was slightly better but still dry.
My partner was also unsatisfied with his tacos. Carnitas and the chicken BLT. There wasn't anything obviously wrong, he just didn't think they are as good as the used to be.
Last issue: the size of the guacamole has gone down by more than half. Not enough for two people, even as...
