Edit I left on Yelp:
Ceviche Dozo was great! It looks like a place that belongs in Downtown Ft. Lauderdale, but for some reason, happens to be in the armpit of Hollywood. The space is small, but set up quite nicely, so that you're not sitting shoulder to shoulder with strangers. The menu is pretty standard for a restaurant with this theme, but I did notice the prices were fantastic. I had the Lomo Don, which was... pretty alright. The steak was a bit overcooked, and not very well seasoned. Heavy flavor is typical of this dish in other restaurants, due to the marinade. However, everything else was very good. Miso soup is A+ (but that's difficult to mess up), the dumplings were on point, and the sushi rolls were excellent. The price really is key here. I don't know if the food is fantastic enough on its own merit, but I would definitely be back here for a quick sushi trip.
Weirdly defensive response to a 4 star review from the owner:
Hi Chris,
Thank you for the review. We are happy you liked our homemade Gyoza and our Sushi. We just wanted to point out a few things
We actually are the only authentic Japanese restaurant in Hollywood and one of the few in Broward. So, not sure if our menu is the same as other authentic Japanese restaurants. We didn't know other restaurants sell Okonomiyaki, Karaaghe and other Japanese dishes as we do.
Maybe you are confusing our dish with something else. We use skirting, which is different from filet mignon and on the menu, there is no written we marinate our meat.
As a Japanese chef that has worked for 13 years in Japan as a Chef and Head Chef, I can say that actually it is very easy to botch miso soup. It would be very long to explain the reasons. We don't use premixed sachets. Our Miso paste comes all the way from Japan. It is organic and non-GMO. We use other ingredients that can be found only in authentic miso soup in Japan. These ingredients aren't used by the majority of the so-called Japanese restaurants. Mainly because the use of these ingredients won't be found in any videos or books. So, just chefs that have actually worked in Japan know about the use of these ingredients.
We realized that given the price a few people don't realize the quality of the food and that behind the restaurant there is a real chef that has worked in Japan for many years.
Thank you again for the review. And hope to see you again at Ceviche Dozo...
Read moreJust go. Get in your car, on your e-scooter, or hop over there on your chevro-legs. Take a spin by this place and see what nearly all other Japanese restaurant in South Florida lack: attention to detail, authenticity, real Japanese food. Harumi is an expert chef and a refreshingly humble one at that.
To say I finally found a place to fill the void left by NBV’s “Japanese Market & Sushi Deli” shuttering, is an understatement. And the Dolphins, Yakko San has only broken my heart over and over as of late.
The absolute best Okonomiyaki on the eastern seaboard. Kansai style with savory sauce and kewpie mayo. I knew it when I looked at it and then again when I tasted it. I don’t care how ludicrous my assertion sounds. Go try it. Tell me I’m wrong.
The chicken katsu curry will make your vegan relatives reconsider their life choices. Crispy chicken served piping hot out of the kitchen, on a bed of perfect fluffy rice. Next time I’ll take photos, maybe.
And the agedashi tofu is soft and light with a robust flavorful dashi based broth. Ordered seconds.
The tuna tataki was perfectly executed, crispy but light and with a tangy sauce FTW.
Couple these with some delicious beer and boba beverage choices and you’ve got a “midnight diner”, IRL.
So glad this place made it into our lives. You’ll likely find me there when you visit, working my way through the rest of Harumi’s...
Read moreYUMM! I've driven by countless times and never even stopped to take a look until one fateful evening I did and decided to check it out for lunch with a coworker. Glad I did! A lot of love, sweat, and effort was put into making this place what it is. Especially when you compare it to its neighbors.
Nothing fancy, but love the attention to details, handwritten menu stands, local craft beers, and most importantly a focus on using natural ingredients to create made from scratch dishes! The result is something delicious, fun, and overall a delight.
Had the Mango, Pineapple, and a lime smoothie which was quite refreshing and would have loved a shot of Don Julio or even some Zacapa Rum in it. Just to kick it up a bit.
I enjoyed the Poke Don, to which my hats off! I had tuna the night before at a "fancier" spot and was disappointed as to the freshness of it. Ceviche Dozo didn't disappoint! The tuna was fresh, chilled, and the poke sauce was great. Very pleased. Also, the price and the portion were right on. Nothing was skimped on.
Very impressed and looking forward to coming back. This is a great gem to have come across. Hope you'll enjoy it as much as I...
