I love eating subs. In fact I would say that I am a sub connoisseur. I rarely ever turn down a sub. I have passed by this place many times and have wanted to check it out, however circumstances have prevented me from doing so until now. From the looks of it, this place looks like a landmark and it's been there for quite some time. Also I see that it's usually busy there. All good signs of a great sub shop. I walk in and scope the place out as there were a few customers ahead of me. The fist thing I notice is that there are quite a few employees all seemingly busy. I also see a guy in front of a meat slicing machine slicing lettuce. Again all good signs. I look at the menu on the wall and the first weird thing I notice is that the menu is in fact a list of condiments, cheeses and toppings which is odd because there is no mention of subs or prices but I digress. I find some menus on top of the counter and proceeded to place my order. Here is when things take a turn. I ask the gentleman for a zesty Italian but I'm not a big fan of capocollo so I ask to have the cap removed in lieu of more ham or pepperoni or salami, whatever. You would have thought that I asked the man to have sex with his girlfriend or wife because of the face he put. He proceeds to ask the dude slicing lettuce who I now assume to be the manager or owner if a substitution was possible to which his answer was no. Not "I'm sorry but...." he just said no. At this point I was kind of stunned and stood there for a few seconds trying to comprehend how a sub shop is incapable of such a simple request. Before I can respond lettuce guy starts talking to the employee, despite me being right there and asks him if I would prefer a ham and salami. At this point I'm completely dejected by the whole experience I wanted to tell lettuce guy to fly a kite, and if I wanted a flipping ham and salami sub I would have ordered that, instead I simply told the obvious new guy to simply make me the Italian the way it comes. It's at that moment I realized why my simple request was denied and it was because all the subs are pre-cut ahead of time. I sat there and watched as the dude meticulously cut skinny rectangles of cheese that didn't even cover the width of the bread and then proceeded to lay down the single layer of deli meats onto the sub. This place is so disappointing. There is no reason why they can't slice the meat freshly when ordered and there is no reason to be so stingy with the amount of protein they give you considering that the foot long I purchased was $10. I was tempted to give this place 1star due to the manager being so incredulous and disrespectful but didn't because the sub was OK despite all the absurdity. In my opinion this place is not worth your time. A couple of miles down the road you'll find way...
Read moreVery good! I was born and raised in Philly and great cheesesteaks are on almost every corner. But here is hard to find. The steak I had from Sub Center was pretty decent. The steak had flavor and the bread was soft and the people were very nice! The only things I didn’t like are the same things I noticed with every steak I’ve had here. I ask for extra onions and peppers but get regular amounts, I asked for 2 types of cheese and couldn’t taste it (because it was mixed in and cooked along with the steak) It seems to be unimportant for the “chef” to drain the grease to keep the steak dry which is key! Also, not cooking the peppers and onions the entire time the steak is cooking is key! They liquify and you can’t taste them. It’s so easy to make a Philly steak that it gets messed up. Cook steak(alone) chop finely (no chunks in Philly steaks) until almost brown, add peppers/onions, toss a few times without chopping, drain grease, shape steak to fit bread while on the grill, lay cheese right on the steak, mayo the bread, bring the bread to the steak and lay on top (not the steak to the bread). I’ll be this specific next time I order but it was still...
Read moreToday’s visit, as usual not short of staff or seems so because most times 5-6 persons behind there serving/preparing which is good, I commend them for that…. But TODAY as I stated I placed my order and the same young man start preparing my tuna sub, I needed it toasted so he inserted into the oven, so in that moment of waiting for the oven; he then began to do something under the juice counter area being down to the floor he tossed out an empty box , so therefore replacing some drink /juice item that ran out. Ok !!! He completed that task and returned to my sub which had taken out by another person waiting for whoever puts it in. Simply put on some gloves and diligently made my tuna sub.. remember none of these veg or other items gonna be washed and cooked; TELL ME SOMETHING HERE, is anything wrong with this PICTURE? My only honest thought about first seeing him doing whatever under the counter was that he would quickly do what he was doing, WASH HIS HANDS & DO MY ORDER!!!!! Because looking at the wiring and the sight of the area it’s gross!! It’s like a plumber finishing up the toilet and began making your peanut butter and jelly...
